"It's a dream I keep having," I said. "Every night, he comes into my bedroom, and he fucks me. And it's so incredible."
Cherry smiled and mussed my hair.
"I wanna have dreams like you, kid," she said.
"Anyway, one of my friends told me to go to the First Time Taboo Agency," I said.
"The what?"
"The First Time Taboo Agency," I said.
"What the fuck is that?" Cherry asked. "Why have I never heard of it?"
I shook my head.
"It doesn't matter," I said. "It's just that they told me to come here. They said that if I did, I would find him."
"Who?" Cherry asked incredulously.
"The man in the shadows!" I said, exasperated.
"But, darling, the man in the shadows could be absolutely anyone," she said. "He could be anyone you want. It's just a dream you have."
"No," I said shaking my head. "You don't understand. The man in the shadows isn't anyone. He's my step-father."
Cherry stopped cold, stunned by my revelation. She then reached a hand under my chin. She pulled my face up. She smiled at me tenderly.
Then she leaned in, and slowly kissed me on the lips.
"You're so sweet, Tulip," she said.
"I need to go home, I think," I said.
"But it's so sweet," she said. "Don't you think? To be in love with your step-father."
"It's grotesque," I said.
Cherry only shrugged.
"I wish I could adopt you. Then I'd be like your step-mother. Then we could... " She stopped. "Oh, well, never mind that..."
God, she was strange!
"But look," Cherry said. "No one will ever force you to do anything here. It's the fundamental commandment of the party. Thou shalt never coerce."
"I see," I said.
"So you're perfectly safe here. No one would dare to make you do anything you didn't wish to do yourself," Cherry said.
"Okay," I said.
"So why don't you let me introduce you to the Baron. You never know, feelings are a strange thing, you might just decide you like him."
"Who is he?" I asked.
"Only the most exquisite man at the party," she said. "He comes every year. He always chooses just one girl to sleep with. He takes her to one of the bedrooms upstairs. Fucks the life out of her. And then he goes home."
