“You and me both.”

“Why’s everyone leavin’?” she asked.

“‘Cause it’s almost midnight.”

“I think we’re the only two left.”

“That a problem?” I asked.

“I think it is for the DJ. I’m sure he doesn’t want to keep playing music for two people.”

“I’m payin’ him a great deal of money. He can do one last song.”

I signaled for the DJ to slow down the song as the kitchen and the bar started shutting down. I wrapped my arms around Katie and pulled her close, our bodies clinging to one another on account of all the beer we’d had. She was giggling, and her eyes were lit up with joy. I missed seeing her like this. I hadn’t seen her this happy in years.

And all while she was in my arms.

“Truth or dare?” she asked.

“What?”

“Truth or dare?”

“You wanna play this now?” I asked.

“Come on. Pick one. Truth or dare?”

“Fine. Truth.”

“I heard from a certain someone you’re looking to settle down with a woman. That true?” she asked.

“Ah, Caleb. I see the two of you talked more than just shop a couple of nights ago.”

“Maybe. You know how persuasive I can be,” she said.

“That I do. And I’m not sure. I feel like I am. The one-night stands are gettin’ old.”

“Too much sex for the old man to handle?” she asked.

“Not too much. But it is gettin’ hard to remember all their names,” I said with a grin.

“Oh, you’re bad.”

“You know it, doll. Your turn. Truth or dare?”

“Truth.”

“How are you feelin’ after everythin’ that’s happened?”

“Everyone keeps askin’ me that,” she said.

“It’s a valid question. You stopped a weddin’. That takes a toll on someone.”

“I feel relieved. And with every piece that falls into place, I know I made the right decision. Michael was right for me at one time, but we ran our course years ago. He wasn’t my forever man. Just my right then man,” she said.

“Makes sense.”

“Your turn. Truth or dare?”
