You shattered me. Wouldn’t you want a say? Wouldn’t you want one now?

The woman was killing me slowly. Living together would literally be the death of me. I felt every breath she took. Remembered the way her pulse pounded beneath my fingertips. The shudder of her breath when my lips touched hers.

Our eyes collided just as she shifted to stand, and I knew in that instant she felt it too. “I’m—”

I put my plate aside and shoved to my feet to kneel in front of her before she could utter another syllable. I was not about to let her get away with this tension still between us. It might be crazy—insanity—but I just couldn’t.

What protected me from you?

“You’re what?” I murmured, my voice low and gravelly.

She uttered a surprised gasp that I caught in my mouth as I took those lips with mine, gently pushing her back into the cushions as I moved between her legs.

I backed up an inch and lifted a brow in question, my fingertips drifting in a featherlight caress from her exposed shoulders down her arms, then across her fingers to her bare knees.

She sucked in a breath. “I was about to, uh, say I was going to bed.” Her voice was whispery soft.

“Right. Good idea.” I caressed up her thighs to her hips, settling myself firmly in between. “But, about earlier...” I moved to her waist, my thumbs brushing under her shirt to the bare flesh of her stomach.

“Earlier?” she said, her lips brushing mine back.

That seemingly unconscious move lit me on fire in so many ways and I loved the way her eyes went heavy at my touch. We would be each other’s demise.

“I need you to accept my apology, Faith.” My thumbs grazed higher, caressing just under her breasts. “It’ll be impossible to live together if you’re pissed at me.”

She reached up and cupped my wrists, stopping me from going any further as her eyes met mine. “It’ll be impossible if you keep breaking the rules, too, Romeo.”

“You weren’t complaining,” I teased with a half grin, but she didn’t smile back.

“What exactly are you apologizing for, Adam?”

I took a breath as my smile fell. “Everything.”

She shook her head, her eyes clearing long enough to burn with blue fire. “Not good enough.”

You shattered me...

Slowly, I drew my hands back and cupped the sides of her face, forcing the words from my soul. “I’m sorry, Faith. For all of it. I’m sorry that I’m no good for you. I’m tainted and broken, and I’ve never deserved to be anywhere near you.” My thumb brushed across her bottom lip, and her eyes fluttered closed. “I’m sorry I’ve only ever brought you pain and being with me will only bring you more.” I pressed my forehead to hers. “Open your eyes, Faith.”

Hers popped open, and I burned with everything I felt, trying like hell to tell her everything I couldn’t say. “But most of all, I’m sorry that, in spite of all that, I still can’t stay away from you.”
