“Sass got into a fight with one of the douchebags and they left us at the first rest stop they could find. If I’d been awake at the time, I’d have gagged her big mouth. But she lulled me into a false calm.

I mean, who in their right mind would get into a fight with the people driving us to our destination? My hot-headed friend does, that’s who.” That mouthful came from Tee.

“He was calling you names, you big moron.”

“IN FRENCH!”

The two girls began arguing, and something was said about someone becoming bear poop, and rain pouring on their head a few hours into their survivor island imitation.

Frankly, I stopped listening because I was still stuck on the fact that my girl hitched a ride with a bunch of fuckers who could have killed them instead of leaving them in the middle of nowhere.

There is one thing you should know about me. I’m rabidly protective of the people I love.

And I’ve been hopelessly and stupidly in love with this girl for as long as I could remember.

I breathed through my nose to calm down. When that didn’t work, I bit my tongue to keep myself from saying anything. The minute I did, I wouldn’t be able to stop, and this wasn’t the time or the place.

That she was giving me defiant looks meant to drive me fucking nuts was not helping my temper.

“You and I have a lot to catch up on,” I gritted out.

“Who, me?” Sass asked with great confusion.

“No, the Jelly Fish over there. How about we go for a drink in Seville, Sarah?”

“No.”

“I must insist.”

“And I insistently refuse.” Oh, she wanted to play that game, now, did she? I pulled off the road and stopped the car.

“OK, then, good luck finding a ride to wherever you’re going.”

“What the effing heck?” This from Sass.

“You wouldn’t dare.” My girl.

“What the what now?” Lizzie.

“Try me.”

“You’re making it a condition to helping us?”

I stared Sarah straight in the eyes and replied, “Yep.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“You hitched a ride with complete strangers. Believe it.”

“My answer is still no,” she stubbornly declared and opened the door an inch before the Amazon grabbed her.

“Her answer is yes.”

“Tee…”

“You’re going on that date if I have to hogtie you there. And I’m stronger than you, I can do it.” No, she wasn’t, but I’d take anything I could get.

“Judas.”
