“Well, if it makes you feel any better, he looked quite afraid for his balls.”

Harry grins, stepping back from the door and glancing my way.

“I’m guessing he’s here for you.”

Jacob smiles at me.

“I am, actually.” His brow furrows. “Ella, I saw the news, and I’m so sorry.”

My heart sinks.

“It’s already…oh God,” I groan.

Jacob winces. “Shit. I apologize, I didn’t realize you hadn’t seen it yet.”

My whole being just deflates. Noel’s betrayal. Oliver’s pile of evidence. Being arrested and charged with killing my own mother. And now, the one man who seemed to just want to give me a shot at a job I know I can soar with, is here at my lowest, probably to tell me to never come near him again with the level of toxicity I bring with me.

“Look, Jacob, I understand,” I mumble quietly. “I mean that. I really appreciate the offer, though, and I hope you find—”

“Ella, I’m actually here to see how I can help.”

I blink, my eyes snapping to his.

“I’m sorry, what?”

He smiles. “I want tohelpyou, Ella. Obviously I don’t believe a word of the nonsense on the TV. And I’m not here as a representative of my father, either.” His brow furrows. “His perpetual pissing contest with Noel is outdated and pathetic, actually.”

He clears his throat, squaring his jaw at me.

“I have a very good lawyer I’d like to introduce you to—”

“Oh, I…” I swallow. “I have one but thank you.”

I ignore the dagger glare from Harry, in my peripheral.

“You’re sure? He’s under my retainer, and I would absolutely consider your using him a part of your employment package.”

“I appreciate it, Jacob, but I do have someone of my own.”

He smiles. “Fair enough. How about a PR team?”

I groan, smiling wryly. “Do they have a time machine?”

Jacob chuckles. “No, but they’re exceptional. I’ll put you in touch, if you want.”

“I…”

“That’s so generous of you, Mr. Prince,” Harry blurts. “She’d love that.”

I glare at her. She rolls her eyes back at me.

Jacob clears his throat.

“The other reason I wanted to stop by, Ella, is to just get something real on the books where we can sit down, sign some papers, and start working together. None of Noel or my father’s bullshit. No garden parties, no royal balls. Just you and I in a conference table, where you can officially pitch me.”

He grins.

“I mean, I’ve probably already spoiled it that you’re absolutely going to be hired. But I’d love if you could present to me and a few members of my team, and then we can sign everything right there.”
