Runningahanddown my face, I expel a frustrated sigh. What the fuck is with these body parts? If they’re only for show to scare or intimidate us, I’m going to be sorely disappointed. From what I’ve heard about Luis, I expected more. Yeah, I know that’s a shitty thing to think about when some poor woman is being maimed and… Wait… Woman or women?

“What?” Alec asks, making me realize I gave voice to the question on my mind.

My gaze is immediately drawn to Mia as I turn around to look at my dark-haired brother, who’s still holding on to our girl.

“I was wondering if this is from the same woman as the—”

“We shouldn’t be discussing that now,” Mia’s sharp voice interrupts me, her gaze straying from Laura to me for a split second. And, yeah, she’s right. It’s not the time, and we’re not alone.

It’s not like me to blurt shit out without considering my surroundings. “Sorry,” I mumble, feeling rather sheepish about my blunder.

Unsure of why Mia’s eyes are trained on Laura, I discreetly shuffle closer to our girl. I would have thought her attention would be on the severed hand, but I trust her. Maybe the hotel employee did something I missed. Though I’m having a hard time imagining what it could be, especially since Mia is looking at the other woman with venom and curiosity in her eyes.

“Let me go,” Laura whimpers. “I won’t tell anyone what I saw. I didn’t see anything.”

The way she flinches when Kas steps toward her and, in a cajoling tone, says, “Hey, hey, we’re not going to hurt you,” makes my hackles rise. Why the fuck is she acting like we hurt her?

“He won’t touch you. None of us will,” I try to reassure her.

“Please, I just want to get out of here,” she pleads. With one pleading look at Kas, she throws herself to the side, unsuccessfully trying to get around him.

Trusting Kas to man the door by himself, I turn my attention to the only woman in the room that matters. Needing to know she’s okay, I pull her away from Alec and into my arms. “Do you know her, babe?” I murmur.

Shrugging out of my hold, she tilts her head to the side. “Who are you?” Mia asks, completely ignoring my question. “We have met before…”

“I-I don’t know who you are,” Laura hiccups.

“Mhmm, you’re lying.” The words barely leave Mia’s lips before she closes the distance between herself and the sobbing woman. Our girl wraps Laura’s ponytail around her hand with lightning-quick movements, forcing her head back. “Who are you?”

“M-my name is Laura,” the blonde cries out as her neck is jerked backward.

“That may be correct, but it doesn’t explain who you are. Let me try with another question. How do I know you?” The atmosphere in our hotel room changes when that question leaves Mia’s lips. Rather than a rising panic, I feel the anger washing over me. Not just mine, it’s coming from my brothers as well.

Instinctively, I reach out for Mia. However, before I touch her, I force my arms back. I clench my jaw so hard I’m worried I’ll crack a fucking tooth. Who is this woman? Although I want nothing more than to take Mia away from her, whoever she is, I remain unmoving.

“Answer the question,” Alec snarls and crosses his arms over his chest.

“Do you need a hand, sweets?” Kas casually asks, his blue eyes flashing angrily when they land on Laura.

“Stay in front of the door,” Mia answers, still not looking away from Laura. “You’re not going to answer me, are you?” When Laura attempts to shake her head, Mia forcefully pulls at the blonde hair wrapped around her fist.

At first, I’m shocked when Laura doesn’t cry out in pain. That is, until a few hair clips fall to the carpeted floor, and the fair hair gives way to a red mane.

“The fuck is going on?” Alec growls.

Mia shoves the no longer blonde woman toward the bed, as far away from the door as possible. “Gaby?” she gasps. “Gaby Harrison?”

“Who is Gaby Harrison?” Kas is the one to ask the question that’s plaguing my mind. “Sweets, who is this?”

Moving closer to Mia and Alec, I take our girl’s hand. “Babe, talk to us.” I don’t like the shell-shocked expression on her face, like she can’t quite believe what she’s seeing.

“This is…” Trailing off, Mia gestures toward Gaby. “She used to be friends with Jewell.”

Squaring my shoulders and cracking my knuckles, I take half a step toward the bed. “Why are you here?”

“I-I didn’t know you would be here, Mia. Your mom tipped me generously to bring the cart to Martin Anderson’s room. I—” Gaby’s voice cracks, and tears roll down her face.

“Why the wig?” Mia asks in a calm tone.
