“When? Who?” His voice is deeper than I’ve ever heard.

“The wedding, that’s all I can tell you.” I wiggle in his firm grip, and he eases his hold but doesn’t let go.

“Who? Or I’m calling Nic. So help me, Cam, help me understand how you can be fucking pregnant. Who was it? Was it ra… rape?” He struggles with the last word.

“No. No. No one took me against my will. I gave it freely.” I rush to comfort him. Though from the look on his face, my words gut him. “If… if I tell you, promise me

not to say a word? I need your word, Sergio. I’m trying to fix this.”

“Fine, for now, I won’t say a word. Now, who’s is it?” he grunts. I can tell he’s losing his temper.

“Alessandro,” I bow my head as his name leaves my lips. I feel like I’m betraying him.

“De Luca? I’m going to fucking murder him,” he rages.

I grab onto him and start to cry, full on hysterics. “Please, Sergio, you gave me your word. I just need some time to process this. Please, I can’t trust anyone else. I need to get to New York. Will you take me?” He nods as he pulls away from me and gets into the car.

* * *

Sergio was silent the whole journey to New York. I hate that he can’t even look at me. It’s the way everyone is going to treat me when they eventually find out.

With shame.

Sergio drops me off at the entrance of Bea’s building.

“I’ll wait here until you go in.” He doesn’t look at me as he addresses me.

I get out of the car. Before I shut the door, I lean in. “Thank you for being there for me, Sergio.” I close the door and press the buzzer to the penthouse.

I’m outside the entrance with my case, my hair is in disarray, and I’m looking more homeless than a daughter of an underboss. I don’t wait too long before I hear my cousin’s beautiful voice.

“Cam.” She squeezes my shoulder, and my eyes flick down to meet hers. Her face is filled with worry as she stares up at me.

She takes me up to the penthouse, and Leo carries my bag. His face is one of stone, and I can tell he’s not happy I’ve shown up a day early and unannounced.

Bea sits me on the couch and drops to her knees in front of me.

“Cam, what’s happened?” she pleads with me to speak.

I just shake my head as I start to sob again, I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much.

Leo’s phone rings, and he answers with a name that fills me with dread, making me flinch.

“Dante… Yes, yes, she’s safe, she’s here… Okay, we’ll see you tomorrow for my mother’s event.” He strides over to us as he disconnects his phone.

“Carmella, I have no idea what’s going on, but I must say, it was very dangerous of you to travel here with no protection.” His voice is deep with a touch of irritation to it.

“Sergio brought me. I wasn’t alone.” I sniff.

“He brought you here without your father’s permission?” Leonardo questions.

“Yes, I asked him to. I needed to get away.” I huff.

“I had it planned for you to arrive tomorrow,” Leonardo states.

“Is me being here a problem? I can check into a hotel and come back tomorrow if you like.” I snip at him.

If he doesn’t want me here, I’ll go, although I could really do with some time alone with Bea.
