"No, sorry to say.Just a book seller working for twelve dollars an hour.Plus, royalty checks which I keep in my savings for travel."

He put his arms around her."You will be famous one day, mark my word."

She shook her head, and he grabbed her hand."No more procrastinating. We came here to skate so let's do it.I'm already planning our next first.”

"What is it?Will it be something I like?"

"After last night, I sure hope so."

"Well, we could skip this and just do that."

"You're not getting out of this that easy. What size skates?'

"Not sure, I'll come with you."

After they'd given the young guy in the shed their regular shoe size, he fit them up with their skates.Tummy full of nerves, Steph found a bench near the entrance to the rink to put them on.

"Here you go.Let's hope they fit."

She picked up the white skates Jason had dropped near her feet and kicked off her boots. Her mittens were too clumsy, so she slid them off, and put them in her jacket pocket. With cold fingers and shaky hands, she unlaced the tight-fitting skates to allow her feet to slide in.They felt snug, but firm.

Jason had finished with his own laces and straightened up.

"Need help with those?"he asked."They can be tricky."

"No thanks.I'm almost done."Jason stood, getting his balance, and she quickly laced hers up, then tucked the remaining laces inside her boots to avoid tripping.

"Okay.Ready to hit the ice?"Jason put out his hand to help her stand.

When their eyes met, she almost melted in the snow. Her knees didn't feel like they'd hold her up.But she knew he would. No man could be more beautiful than this man before her.All she had to do was say yes.Travel was freedom, but for her it might be the end of dreams

She swallowed a sudden lump in her throat."Okay, but I'm not promising anything."Her feet nearly slipped out from under her, but she had his arm to hold onto."I must admit I'm a little scared."

"Me too.But once we get the feel of it, it'll all come back to us."

"I think I was about seven last time I skated."She sucked in her bottom lip."How about you?"

"The last time I did a face plant."He grinned.

"Thanks! You fill me with such confidence."She clung to him as they gingerly stepped toward the rink.

A group of kids ran around them, heading straight for the ice.One brushed by so close she almost fell over.Jason grabbed her by the waist and steadied her, then called out to the kids."Whoa, take it easy boys, you almost sent us flying."

A rosy cheeked boy gave him a thumbs-up, then pushed off to catch his buddies.

"Look at you," he said with a comic grin."Walking like a natural."

"Yeah, right."She gave a nervous laugh."I'm so shaky, my knees are wobbling."

"I'll keep you on your feet.I promise."He took her hand and put an arm around her protectively as they first stepped onto the ice."We'll take it nice and slow."

"I sure hope so!"It was much too late to back out now.

"Trust me, okay?"Jason didn't let go of her hand and had another on her back. They moved along the side of the railing, far away from the frisky kids. They were taking baby steps but still her knees trembled.

"I'm such an idiot, thinking I could do this," she told him."I'm sorry."

"I'm not.I get to hold you close to me and keep my hand next to your butt."
