ChapterTwenty-Two

DONOVAN

Ifound Savannah and Grace leaving the diner carrying shopping bags in their hands.

“Successful shopping trip?”

“It was,” Savannah replied, her welcoming smile almost my undoing. “Mathilda has an eye for style. She’s also looking forward to the cookout tomorrow.”

“Great. But on that, be prepared. A tornado called Emily will be taking over the cabin tomorrow. We might get roped into the preparations.”

“That’s great. I’m happy to help. And me and Grace can dial back the drunk when we go out tonight.”

He laughed. “I’ll drop you off later, pick you up once you’re done? I’ll spend some time with Kyran and Harrison in the guest cabin beforehand.”

“They’re coming today?” Grace squeaked excitedly.

“Due any time soon. Max will be here tomorrow.” I took Savannah’s hand, explaining, “Max is the leader of our alliance.”

“Grace gave me the heads up. I look forward to meeting them all.”

“I can’t wait for them to meet you, too. Tomorrow night, we’ll have the cookout, then the morning after that I’ll meet with them to discuss the issue of Gideon.”

Savannah frowned. “I still don’t like me throwing this problem into your lap.”

“You weren’t the problem. Gideon pulled the trigger. You’re the bullet who chose not to hit home.” I lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles in reassurance. “He’ll keep firing if I don’t do something about him, and one day, he might hit his target. I need to resolve it.”

Grace sighed. “You two are so damn sweet together it hurts my heart. Let me dump these bags in the garage, and then we can walk to the border while we wait for Harrison to come in. I need to squeeze Justin some. The cutey.”

Laughing, we walked with her to leave her purchases behind. I loaded Savannah’s into my truck to take back to the cabin later, then the three of us walked, unhurried, to the edge of town.

Kyran’s sleek, silver pick-up truck appeared in the distance not long after we arrived near the border. He honked his horn upon seeing us waiting for their arrival, eventually parking up alongside us on the long, tree-bordered road. An SUV parked up behind him.

Harrison had also arrived.

I waved in welcome at my brothers, eager to show off Savannah like an excited pup. Kyran climbed out of his car as did Harrison, but Harrison went to the back to unclip Justin, who giggled enthusiastically when he caught sight of me.

My heart warmed at the sight of the boy. Or wily toddler with the sneaky capability of drawing us all under his spell hook, line, and sinker. He had soft skin of oak like his mother with a mop of dark curls, and cute cherub cheeks that got him too much of his own way when he turned on the adorable smile. He loved tigers, something that frustrated us considering we were wolves, but we’d all fallen in love with the kid.

“Uncle Donny!” Justin screeched, his tiny fists opening and closing to demand a cuddle.

“Hey, kid.” I took him from Harrison’s arms, and he gave me a death grip around the neck. His version of a hug. I laughed. “Missed you, too, bud. How about letting Uncle Donny breathe now?”

Justin giggled, looking over his shoulder. “Ooh. Pretty!”

I turned to see Savannah and smiled. “You’ve got good taste.”

“I think he means these,” Savannah laughed, twirling her new earrings. “But I’ll take what I can get. Hey Justin. I’m Savannah.”

“Sabana?” The kid tilted his head to the side, dark eyes wide as if he knew the power they held in turning people into sappy puddles of mud. I noticed the second those chocolate pools struck Savannah right in the heart.

“How about you call me Sav?” she told him, a bright smile on her face as she stroked Justin’s cheek. “You are too adorable.”

“He’s getting way too good at this,” Kyran muttered, leaning against the truck.

Harrison agreed, shoving his hands in his pockets. “I don’t know whether to be proud or run for the hills. He sucker punches me every time. Especially when it comes to cookies.”

I took in my friend, glad to see the darkened circles had lightened beneath his eyes. Broad-shouldered and as tall as the rest of us, Harrison was an alpha who led his pack from the creepy manor he called home. He’d hacked off his long light brown hair, and clipped his unkempt beard close to his face. He didn’t look like he’d walked out of the salon with that hatchet job, but he no longer looked like the man time had forgotten either.
