I stare at the controller in my hand. Roll the analogue buttons under my thumb.

“Do you think she’s falling for him?”

He can hear in my tone that I’m worried.

Fuck.

Hate that about myself. Hate that she gets me like this.

“Nah, man. Not really. I mean, you know her.” He shrugs. “Gets attached to her baristas. Remember that poor bastard from PAUL who took a flu? She made us all sign a card. And she gave him a £5000 get well present?”

I start laughing. I think he took a restraining order out for her after that. She’s such a fucking idiot and I miss her so fucking much.

“She just gets attached to people. Abandonment issues, man…” Jo shrugs it off like it’s just a flesh wound, not this big, shitty monster in my pocket. “If she’s like that with the guy who gives her an oat milk latte every day, imagine what she’s like if someone’s giving her an orgasm — even if it is all just to get back at you.” He gives me a bit of a look, sort of wry, sort of wary. “But honestly, man — and I hate to tell you this — but I reckon she was kind of attached to him before anyway. There’s been a vibe there the last few years.”

“I feel sick.” I drop my head in my hands.

He smacks me on the back.

“Beej, it’s gonna be fine.”

“What if she becomes the neck that turns the head of the Haites dynasty?”

Jonah chuckles. “Could you imagine?”

“Yeah. I can, Jo.” I stare at him. “That’s the problem.”

Jo shakes his head again. “Julian thinks that loving people makes you weak. Thinks that it gives his enemies an extra thing to hold over him or some shit. So, set you aside — and you’re a big aside—” He gives me a look. “It won’t last. He won’t let it.”

Where are you?

Just finishing up at the office

So you’re on Bond Street?

Hahaha

Yes. How did you know?

Lucky guess.

Come over?

Really?

Yes

I just left this morning?

Don’t be a fisher of men.
