Page 22 of Her Arrival

My eyes are glued to the back of Alana’s head as I hover outside of the pack leaders’ cabin. The sound of feet shuffling floats into my ears, and I turn to my right.

The male wolf that I usually see with Jenna is standing in front of me. His hands are tucked in his pockets, and the expression he wears is something close to relaxed, but his shoulders are pinched tight.

He nods at me and says, “Wesley, right?”

I scan his face, trying to figure out the source of his nervousness.

I nod and he extends his hand towards me, “Brad. I’ve seen you around since you came to our pack, but I haven’t had a chance to talk to you.”

I knit my eyebrows together and say, “What would you want to talk to me for?”

“I like what you stand for, dude. I haven’t seen anyone go toe to toe with Jenna, well, ever. She’s kind of intimidating.”

I scoff. “If intimidating means she has a hard on for power, then yeah, she’s plenty intimidating.”

“Yeah, exactly.”

I chuckle, and Brad joins me, and soon we’re laughing enough to catch Amina’s eye as she drifts by. She wrinkles her nose, then heads over to her friends.

I shake my head. “I see that politics is a big part of this pack.” I shrug. “It’s not like it matters, I’ll have my way before too long. That’s how it always works.”

Brad turns his head to one side and asks, “‘Always works’? What does that mean? Are you used to taking over packs or something?”

His voice holds a lilt of nervousness and I shrug.

I’m used to getting my way.

I grin at him and shake my head. “It doesn’t matter, dude. So, you sure you want to be seen talking to me? Jenna might have your head.”

Something like fear passes over his face before he says, “I’m not too worried about it. I’m allowed to have friends. If you need anything, I’ve got your back. You seem like a cool dude.”

“Yeah, you too man, thanks.”

Brad grins and his eyes slide to the side. Jenna is staring daggers at him, and I take that as my cue to get the hell away from him to lighten whatever she’s about to throw his way.

It’s good to have an ally.

I narrow my eyes as I watch Alana shuffle towards the bonfire. She plops down in front of it, and I picture how her skin would feel against mine if I scooped her up and held her in my lap. The muscles in my jaw clench as I try to steady myself.

I’ll leave her alone for now. That’s what she wants, and I can’t make her want me.

I can’t quite pull my eyes off of her, which is why I don’t miss when Amina strolls up to her.

Amina squats beside her, leans forward, and whispers something in her ear. My eyes widen as Alana jumps to her feet and transforms into her wolf.

What the hell is going on?
