“Probably,” he says with a smile. “A girl needs to know how to protect herself. Especially if she gets in as much trouble as her mom.”

They share a private look.

“I’d invite you to join us, but I get the feeling you already ate,” Nick says.

“We did,” Avery says. “But, thank you.”

“Avery’s obsessed with the cookies and cream milkshake here. Have you had it?” Ryker asks.

We shake our heads.

“Oh, my God, it’s to die for,” she gushes. “Smothered with Oreos, chocolate chip cookies, ice cream sandwiches, chocolate crunchies, frosting…”

“You’re giving me a toothache,” Nick says.

“I didn’t think my sweet tooth could get any worse until I became pregnant,” Avery says.

“It’s okay, baby. You’re eating for two.” Ryker wraps his other arm around her waist and his hands move over her stomach. Avery laces her fingers through his and I can’t help but smile. They are too adorable together.

“Well, it was good seeing you, Nick. And, nice meeting you, Savannah,” Avery says. “I’m about ready to go back up to the room and put my swollen ankles up.”

“C’mon, I’ll take care of you, Ave,” Ryker says. “Good meeting you.”

Nick and I say goodbye and I watch them walk away. I know we’ve barely been married 24 hours, but I really want Nick to look at me the way Ryker looks at Avery.

One day, hopefully.
