“Ever since you got out of the car, I have seen the tattoo that I will be doing for you.”
Uh oh. Is he willing to go that far?
Before he has a chance to respond, Oscar jumps in with advice.
“It is an honor to be tattooed by a Ka’ uhi, a tattoo master.”
Lucky lifts his chin in pride and stares until Alek speaks.
“Yeah. Okay. Maybe something small? On my shoulder?”
“This is not a tattoo parlor where you choose number four from the wall. I am a priest in the art.”
“Can I see what my choices are?”
“No. I speak to my ancestors and yours. They guide me.”
I want to say ‘don’t do it!’ But instead keep my trap shut.
“I’m in. Let’s do it.”
Now we get a smile.
“Good. I will get my moli, you go outside with Oscar. He will show you where to lay.”
“What is a moli?” I ask for the both of us.
“My tools. They are all handmade.”
Alek looks like a wrongfully accused man going to the electric chair. He’s trying not to show the fear that must be racing through his body. Mine is enough for the two of us.
Out back, is a covered overhang with a padded spread stretched out. Dum da dum dum.
“Lay here on your right side and take it. He likes you.”
“Oh great. Are his tools clean?”
With a wave of his hand, Oscar dismisses any hesitations.
“He’s done three for me, man. Never had any problems. You are in good hands.”
“I’m going to be next to you in case you want to hold my hand,” I say.
I get a look for my efforts. Pretty sure he wants to run but has no interest in looking like a little pussy.
Lucky walks out carrying a case. He puts a finger to his lips. We obey the command to shut the hell up right now.
He sits crossed legged by Alek’s side and closes his eyes. We wait. And wait. Then a little more waiting.
“Alright. The ancestors have spoken. Let us begin.”
“So what did tell say?”
“They told me of your patience.”
That’s surprises him. Big Lucky chuckles.
