“The real issue, then, is the trust between you has been burnt.”

I glance down at my bloodied hands. “She says she never intended to do what she was asked.”

“And do you believe her?”

“I don't know. I've known Elena a week. It’s not as if we’ve spent much time together.” I don't know why I'm so angry, considering that fact. But I had got caught up in the emotion of it all, in the whirlwind of being married and making our marriage work. I felt as if I had known her longer.

“You are a good judge of character, Kane. Better than I am, or Lucas is. What does your gut tell you?”

“That Hamish is behind this. But it doesn't excuse her.”

“We all know Charlotte, over the years, has pushed us into things we didn't want to do. Perhaps Hamish is the same.”

“Elena wouldn't do something she didn't want to.”

Zeke considers this for a moment. “What you need to understand is why she did this or why she wanted to do this. We both know, Kane, the lengths we would go to for our family. If you were asked to spy on her to further our family’s objectives you would do it without hesitation, no matter how you feel about her. Figure that out, and her reasoning behind it, and then you can move forward, if you choose to.”

My brother is right. I need to understand Elena's motivations and whether this came from a bad place that could damage the Fraser firm. Because without knowing that, all I can see is the fact she stabbed me in the back.

“When did you become so sage?” I demand on an irritated huff of breath.

Zeke grins at me and shifts his shoulders. “Let's face it, I've always been the smart one. Get cleaned up and go home and talk to your wife.”

I wash up in the small shower cubicle in the room adjacent to the kill room. Zeke goes out to the car and gets a change of clothes for me from the boot. I always carry a spare suit, just in case. I never know where this job will take me and how dirty I will get on the way.

Once I'm clean, I head back out to the car where my brother and Ford are waiting. Zeke roams his gaze over my face, making sure I’m not about to lose my mind and go nuclear. I am not calm, but I do feel calmer.

Zeke cups the side of my neck, a reassuring gesture that eases some of the tension in my spine. “Try not to kill Elena. My wife will kill me if we get drawn into a war.”

“I can't make any promises,” I mutter.

I climb into the back of the car and Zeke steps back, his hands digging into his pockets. He watches Ford pull the car out of the warehouse's car park, and when he disappears from view, I wonder if he will have to clean up the mess I have made.

Ford glances in the rear-view mirror. “Home then?”

I shake my head. “Just drive for a bit.” I'm not ready to face her yet. I need a little more time to collect my thoughts and calm the boiling heat inside me.
