“It’s not the same with Kyle and me. He isn’t being sent off to war. He’s leaving because he wants to. Because he has to. He has a life in California. And I have a life here. I still have to finish school.”

“If he knew you wanted him around for longer than a summer, he would find a way to make it happen.”

“I don’t think so. We agreed this would end in August or whenever one of us leaves.”

“But that’s not what you want, is it?”

I shake my head.

“So tell him. Don’t be some shy wallflower waiting on the side of the room hoping the boy you love will ask you to dance.”

“It’s not the same as—”

“Tell him how you feel. The man shouldn’t have to guess what you’re thinking. I was lucky enough to have a man who forced me to tell him how I felt but not all men are like that. Some have to be told, plain and simple, then pounded over the head a few times until they get it.”

I laugh. “I get that, but Kyle and I have already agreed that this will end after the summer.”

“That was before. This is now.” She stands up. “Talk to him. There’s no harm in being honest with him, is there?”

“I guess not.” Other than the harm of embarrassing myself if he doesn’t feel the same way.

She walks to the window. “My date is here.” She goes to the door. “I’ll try not to be late getting back.”

“Take your time. I’ll cover for you until you get back.”

“You’re such a doll.” She winks at me. “That boy would be a fool to let you go.”

When she’s gone, I’m about to call Kyle but Nina calls. “What’s up?”

“What do you think about going out tonight?”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. You can pick.”

“Why?” I ask, because she never lets me pick. “What are you up to?”

“Josh is coming to town and I don’t want to be alone with him.”

“You want me to come with you on your date with Josh?”

“Not just you. You and your boyfriend.”

“Wait. Hold on. Why is Josh coming to town?”

“He wanted to talk so I kinda told him we could.”

“So you’re talking again?”

A few days after the firehouse fundraiser Nina and Josh went out for dinner and briefly got back together, but then got in a fight. She wouldn’t tell me what the fight was about and ever since then, the two of them have been on-again, off-again, but mostly off. She hasn’t talked to him for over a week.

“We’re trying to be friends,” she says. “So far, it’s not working.”

“Because you keep arguing?”

“Yes.”

“Which leads to you two having sex.”
