“Yeah apparently Arden used to do that often. He finds lost souls and gives them a place to live and work.”

“Oh, so that new guy’s special?”

It was slight, but the corner of Eldon’s mouth dipped down in a frown and his normally serene eyes clouded over. Micha wasn’t sure what he was reading into, but a part of him wanted to push.

“I don’t know about that.”

Micha glanced over at the three newcomers, and his stomach twisted. What if one of them was the guy sent to watch over him?

“Well if Arden chose them personally…”

Eldon shook his head. “He’s just helping them out.”

“Are you sure? How would that benefit him?”

Micha recalled the picture and his savior's words. Arden wasn’t good, and he needed to remind himself of that. Clearly, he was putting on a show. Micha just had to be smart enough not to fall for it.

Eldon’s head tilted slightly, and he was once again fully focused on Micha. “What are you getting at?”

Micha shook his head. He needed to back up. “Nothing. Sorry.”

Eldon was silent for a second, and Micha wanted to go and hide. He’d nearly given himself away.

“Micha, is some—”

“Hey Eldon, get over here, now,” Arden shouted.

Saved.Micha was practically shaking like a leaf as he stood there under Eldon’s heavy gaze.

“I'm going to go clean my room,” Micha said, his breath hitching at the end.

“It’s already clean, Micha.” Eldon crossed his arms. “I was in there earlier.”

Right. Micha tried to think of something, anything, but his mind was stupidly blank. “Uh.”

“Eldon,” Arden called again, a slight growl added to his tone.

Why wasn’t the vampire leaving?

“He’s sounding a little upset, you better go,” Micha said.

Eldon opened his mouth and lifted his hand. It was as if his instincts kicked in. A part of him that he’d thought he could ignore, but as the stress of why he was there tightened around him like a bear trap, he reacted without thought. Micha flinched and squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the inevitable blow to strike. His chest ached, and his jaw flared in anticipatory pain as he held as still as possible.

When the blow didn’t come, Micha dared to pry a single eye open, and he sucked in a breath at the hurt and confusion that played on Eldon’s face. Why did he look so sad?

“Micha, I—” Eldon’s gray eyes skirted over to Arden, and he sighed. “Go ahead and pick out your outfit for tonight. You might have one or two of the newcomers under you while they learn the job.”

Micha nodded, unable to say anything more as Eldon walked past him and rested a hand on his shoulder. It was like the first time they met all over again. The last thing Micha wanted was for Eldon to go back to tip-toeing around him. He’d gotten used to the vampire now, but with the stress of trying to figure out how to seduce Arden and having someone watch him, he was spiraling.

No one at PGD would abuse him, but Micha had almost hoped for Eldon to slap him. Maybe then he’d get the jumbled mess of thoughts in his head together. A heavy sigh slipped between his lips, and he made his way back upstairs.

Opening the door to the host living space, a black fur ball dashed out past him and nearly made him trip. His feathers fluttered behind him, and Micha turned to see a cat go up the second set of stairs.

“Spooky?”

Micha looked back at the door and then the stairs again. The only thing up there was Arden’s private space. Hesitation made his feet heavy, but with one glance around and no sight of Arden, he made up his mind. The dragon would be busy with his new employees anyway.

Micha climbed the stairs right behind the familiar and blew out a breath as he came to the door he hated going through. The only time he was ever upstairs was to be reprimanded by Arden. It had happened twice so far, and Micha wasn’t looking for a repeat, but he also knew the information he sought lay right behind the door.
