She stared at me for a moment, worrying her bottom lip. I tilted my head to one side and raised my eyes.

She swallowed as she moved off the bed. Walking around and taking a notepad and rummaging through a drawer, she found a pen. She wrote some words on a piece of paper and came back and handed it to me.

I read the note and sucked in a breath. Then I held my hands in the air and threw my magic into the corners of the room. "I've put ward spells around the room. We can talk about it now and nobody will know."

Lacey smiled. "Ward spells… nice."

"You're free to talk now," I said, wanting to know more.

She nodded. “I thought Clay was going to give me up and send me to the dark king, but he said it was in case he killed me,” she said and my head went into a spin, thinking of the measures the magical kingdom took to protect their own kingdom. “By anyone, not just the dark king, I suppose he was right after what the king of the vampires did.”

I nodded, but after the conversation I’d had with Seb, her problem was closer to home. “I agree.”

“Carter’s?” I asked, wondering if it was when they were bound.

Her eyes widened, and she shook her head and I knew then what she meant.

“Kane’s,” she said and laughed. “Not planned. It was when I lost my virginity.”

And right at that moment, I could have killed Jack for the way he thought we should have dealt with Lacey in the beginning. Yeah, she thought we were fun and easy, but she wanted something more than that.

“I didn’t know, though. I was pregnant for nearly five months before I found out, and I nearly died having her,” she whispered. Bile reached my throat. “Kane made Clay bring me back with magic. Clay claims he didn’t. He said I recovered.”

“Clay was telling the truth, but it must delight him you gave him an heir,” I said.

"Yeah," Lacey sighed. “If the dark king is right and Clay thinks he is, I’ll want him, hell a little of me thinks I already do and after kissing him I get what he means. I just don’t think I can leave my knights, and that includes you.” She picked up the piece of paper. “Or... I can’t leave, so I have to do something about it. Which means I have to fight my feelings for him, which also means I’ll have to fight him. I don’t even know if I am powerful enough to kill him.” Her breath hitched as she said that. I realised then she didn’t know if she could kill the Dark King because of her feelings for him.

I nodded and held out my arms. She fell into my chest and I wrapped her inside. “I understand.”

“Thank you. Do you think differently of me?” she asked, and I could see her concern as her eyes fluttered around my face, searching for an answer, desperate to hear something she needed.

“No, why would I?” I asked.

“I’ve told you more than I should. If I’d have told that to any of the others, they would have flipped at me. You heard Seb in the car and Kane is worse than Seb.”

I’d never felt so jealous of anyone as I did of Kane right now and inside I was fuming, not only with myself but with Jack for the way we played it. But not anymore, because Lacey would be mine and only mine. I pulled her closer to me and kissed her head. “As long as we have the same one day. I already told you it was what I wanted.”

“Okay, one day. I need to defeat the Dark King before that can happen, though." She chewed on her lip as she stared at me and inhaled a deep breath, and smiled.

I held her tight and kissed her head. “Which means you have to bind with your knights to strengthen you.”

“It does, but it means I need to know I definitely love them, or I could ask Clay to lift the spell.”

“You could bind to me first. You already love me,” I said and pushed her back to look into her eyes.

Her eyes flitted left to right as she stared back at me. “What if I only think I love you?” she said. “I’ve always felt something for you, but I thought you were trying to put me off.”

“Why?”

She shrugged her shoulder casually. “You know, you and Jack made it seem like we’d all be friends with benefits. You had your lover leave you and you wanted to replace her, but you never said or made it seem it would be anything other than sex with me.”

“Fuck, Lace. I told you it would be more than that,” I said. I slammed my head into the pillow.
