She was looking up at him with expectation. Her breath coming in short, sharp bursts, her eyes wide. She was greatly anticipating the story he was about to tell, and up until this moment, everything he’d said had been true.

Krav had never considered himself a liar. But he had never worried over much about it either. If a lie would do better than the truth, there was no harm in it as far as he was concerned. And he had decided before she had come out to dinner that he had one goal. To make her his bride. To make this thing between them last.

He could not be the sole parent in Soriya’s life. It would be a mistake. Beyond a mistake. He had vague memories of the way his mother had held him. Of the way she had taken care of him. But vague memories were all he had.

The things that he remembered with sharp clarity were the harsh beatings that his father had doled out. The cruelty. The way that he had belittled him. And he would never...

He would never do that to Soriya. He was not afraid of being his father.

But there was a gray space that he feared almost more.

He was a man who prided himself on being an expert in all things. But he was not an expert on how to care for a child. How to give them what they needed.

And he feared his negligence would cause irreparable damage.

He was a cold bastard.

And that was why lying now seemed easy.

There was no reason not to.

She wanted a love story.

He thought of their days together. The nights. If he had been another man, that would have been a romance. But of course, he had shattered the illusion in the end.

He could see that she needed a love story. So why not give it to her? Why not give her the love story that she needed to be happy?

Maybe somewhere in there he would find that space again.

Where she had looked at him with joy and he had felt...

The days had stretched on there, like endless summer days he’d heard about but never had. The Valenti heir could never be still. Could never take a break. Could never rest.

With her, sometimes it had felt like rest.

He had tricked her into seeing a man, and not the monster he knew he was.

He wanted that again.

She needs it, that’s what matters.

“It was like you had always been there,” he said.

“I cooked for you. We stayed at the tree house for a while after. Then we moved on to my hotel in the city. From there we went back to Europe. We took a tour.”

“I must’ve gotten pregnant very quickly,” she said.

“Yes,” he said. “Though, we...were often overcome with passion.”

Her cheeks went scarlet, and he wanted to touch her. “What happened? When I found out?”

“You were scared,” he said. Because she must’ve been. Then again, he felt that it was best if there was a ring of truth to all of this.

He saw that moment again in his mind.

I’m pregnant.

She had been happy.
