She pulled his hands from his temples and put them on her waist. He pulled her close then bent her back, kissing her neck, her throat, her breasts through the dress.

And then she was in his arms, and he was carrying her to the bed, laying her down and coming down on top of her. His kisses were not light now. They were deep and consuming. She couldn’t think, couldn’t do anything but kiss him back, touch him, and feel. She needed this. She hadn’t known how much she wanted his touch, longed for it, ached for it. She had him now and did not ever want to let him go.

His hands were under her skirts, and she shivered when they entered her drawers and his fingers skated over her sex.

He groaned at the heat and the moisture there, and she groaned back when he entered her. Two fingers this time, the pressure of them making her arch with pleasure. He teased and stroked, and her body responded, her breathing quickening as she reached for release. It was coming quickly. Her pent-up lust was finally being satisfied by more than her mere imaginings.

She cried out when the climax came, fierce and violent, pushing hard into his hand and gripping his coat in both fists. And then she fell back, eyes closed, and he lay beside her. He rolled onto his back, staring at the ceiling.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

She looked at him in surprise.

“Not for—” He gestured toward her. “Well, for that too, I suppose. It’s like a sickness. It clouds me brain, and I can think of nothing but the cards. Even when I’m playing, when I’m losing money, it’s as though I’m watching someone else. I can’t stop meself.”

She listened as the pleasure still buzzed through her.

“And the drink goes hand-in-hand with the cards. I found if I drank, I could resist the cards. Not for good, but for a little while. And then I was drinking and playing.”

“And now you’re surrounded by both. Baron should never have sent you.”

“You deserve someone better.”

She shook her head. “There isn’t anyone better. I watched you. No one else could have done what you did tonight. You gained us entry into Innishfree’s private quarters.”

“It was luck.”

“It was you.” She leaned up on her elbow. “And you’re not alone. You don’t have to fight this on your own. I’m here.”

He nodded, but his eyes were dubious. She was losing him.

“We can talk more,” he said, his voice flat.

“Talk isn’t enough for you,” she said. “You need another release.” And she wanted more of him.

She reached for her shoes and slid them off. Then she unpinned her hair and let it fall. She reached for the bodice of her dress, but he sat and grasped her hand with his own.

“No. I won’t have you sacrificing your virginity to me like this.”

She hardly thought it would be a sacrifice, not after the way he had made her feel a few moments before. “That wasn’t what I had in mind.”

His eyes narrowed, then swept over her hair and their place on the bed. “What are you thinking then, lass?”

“Take off your clothes, and I’ll show you.”

His eyes went wide. “Not your best idea.”

She would have to spell it out to him, but that probably wouldn’t be the most embarrassing thing she did this night. “You touched me and gave me a release. I thought if I touched you—”

He shook his head. “You don’t have to do that.”

She caught his chin and turned it toward her. “I want to.”
