“Watch it, Asura. Kids are around,” Derrick warns.

I roll my eyes, sipping my drink.

My father’s study opens, and he comes out. “Diaboli, mihi opus set ire.”I need to go.

I stand, moving out into the hall with my father. “Everything okay?”

“I don’t know when I’m going to be back.”

“Okay.”

His gray brows bounce. “Those… intruders…were after you, Asura. You are the heir.”

I nod.I tend to forget.“I have four hellhounds living with me. I’ll be fine until you get home, Dad.”

“Asura…”

“Go. If you’re good, I’ll leave a few cinnamon rolls.”

“No, you won’t.” He smirks, patting my head.He knows me all too well. “I love you. Call me if you need anything.”

I nod.

He moves to the dining room, giving kisses to my brothers. “Enjoy breakfast. I have a meeting. Bye, kids. Love you all.”

My brothers reply, all reciprocating that they love him, too, as the others say their goodbyes.

I walk my dad out. He kisses my head before moving to his car. Something moves in the corner of my eye, and I see it’s a Shadow Guard shifting. They really look like shadows. I close the door, moving back to the dining room. I see the plate of cinnamon rolls are gone. “You guys are vultures!” I snatch Ledger’s before he can eat his. He growls at me while I hold it over my head. “You already had some!”

Ledger smirks and I see the sugar at the corner of his mouth. “No!”

I snort. “So, what’s on the corner of your mouth, Ledger!”

He licks his lips, drawing my eyes to it, but he sits back. “It was Fen’s idea.”

Fen’s eyes almost bug out of his head. “No!”

I sit down, sending him a look. I know it’s because he is giggling uncontrollably. His laughter makes me smile. It sounds very innocent and childlike, even as he reveals more cinnamon rolls.

Khazon throws me over his shoulder for the third time this morning. It knocks the wind out of me again, making my lungs burn. He didn’t leave, but instead helped with training.Which has been lovely…

Hazen kneels beside me, growling. “Do you have to keep hurting her?”

Khazon scoffs as he fixes the wrapping on his knuckles. “Do you have to baby the fuck out of her? She’s a grown fucking woman. Let her handle herself.”

Hazen glares at him. “Fuck off, asshole.”

I grab Hazen’s shoulders to sit up. “Calm down, Haze.”

“Yeah,Haze,” Khazon snaps.

My head snaps to look at him. His eyes are hard, focused on Hazen. “Calm yourself, Khazon.”

He pries his eyes from my hound as Hazen helps me up. Hazen brushes the dirt off me. “Are you okay?” he asks.

“Yeah, you?”

Hazen nods. “You know, you seem to be able to hold your own pretty well with him.”
