I chuckle. He tucks his hands into his pockets and gives the back of the house a onceover.

“Aidan O’Rourke.” He turns the name over in his mouth, like he’s trying to examine it from all sides. “Why does that sound so familiar?”

“He’s kind of a big deal in some circles.”

“Is he your dad?”

“No, he’s...” I’m not sure what to call him at this point. Boyfriend doesn’t feel right, and Dom is too personal. “He’s my guardian.”

Sam’s phone chimes in his pocket. He pulls it out to look at the screen.

“I should take this,” he says, lifting the phone to his ear. “Hey, Dad... Yeah, I got the dates wrong again. Listen, I’m actually on my way to a job interview.”

Mrs. Cline marches onto the terrace, trailed by my instructor, Shayna, a slim, dark-skinned woman with a gym bag slung over her shoulder.

“Can I help you?” Mrs. Cline says to Sam.

“Gotta go,” he says, then ends the call. “Just passing through, ma’am.” He winks at me. “I hope we run into each other again, Grace Whittaker.”

Mrs. Cline keeps an eye on Sam as he jogs toward the trees. “Who was that, Grace?”

“I’m not sure.” I pick up my pointe shoes and turn my full attention to my dance instructor. “Hey, Shayna. Let’s head up to the studio.”
