“Good. Send them niggas straight in this direction,” she said, her friends hyping her up with a collective “yesssss bitch!”that made it clear I was missing some context.

But it wasn’t my business.

“Where the hood niggas at?!” they started chanting, making me laugh.

“Hey Erica!” I called over to the bartender, getting her attention. “A round of shots for these ladies, on me.” That wonmean appreciative ovation of my own, and I chuckled as I walked off, toward the front of the bar.

“Yo, why you hyping them up?” Kev asked, reminding me that he’d been trailing along behind me since he’d arrived after work. It seemed like a week had happened since I told him I would see him “later”, instead of just a few hours.

I sighed, shaking my head, and giving another table that didn’t look like they were about that life a quick warning before I answered. “They’re having fun. You got something against fun?”

“Getting ran through the night before you marry some poor chump isfun?”

I stopped to turn in his direction and crossed my arms.

He was lucky he was fine.

And his dick was big.

’Cause otherwise…

“What do you think the groom is doing right now, assuming he’s in Vegas too, if it’s the night before the wedding?” I asked. “Taking in a show? Hitting the poker tables?”

Kev sucked in a breath, his eyes moving wildly as he tried to come up withsomething.

“Exactly.” I chuckled, turning to continue on my way. “That nigga is without question, balls deep in stranger pussy, and it’s probably a regular occurrence. She can do hoe shit with her friends if she wants. As a matter of fact—Erica!” I yelled across the bar. “Make it a double.”

“Can’t believe you’re encouraging that,” Kev muttered, following me outside, where I stopped again, waiting for him to approach me.

“I think youcanbelieve it,” I said, reaching out to take his pretty ass face into my hands. Copper skin, strong features, lush facial hair…on a shallow level, he really hadeverythinggoing for him. And really, that was about as deep as I wanted to take anything, with anybody. “My indulgence of saidhoe shitis exactly how I ended up takingyouhome.Did you forget?”

“Chill with that, Tati.”

That’s what came out of his mouth, but the smirk on his face said different as he used the back of his hand to wipe a sheen of sweat from his brow, courtesy of the dry Nevada heat.

Occasionally, Kev needed a little reminder of how this thing between us had started and that this was as far as it would ever go. I wasn’t his ol’ lady, his girlfriend, nothing of the sort. It was a stretch to call it “dating”, even.

We were having fun, that was all.

Movement on my other side made me look up, just as Onyx approached, hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans.

Clean ones.

I wiped my interaction with Kev from my features to put displeasure on my face. I didn’t need this man knowing he had the power to affect me.

He did, though.

It was like a switch had flipped once Brandon decided to bring him into the fold. Before that, I hadn’t really cared about “Onyx” enough to be bothered by him. He had value he could add to thePredators, and that was that.

Now though?

Everything from the easy swagger in his step to thatgoddamnblack cross dangling from his ear – the type of thing that would’ve looked foolish on anybody else, but only added tohiscool – irked the shit outta me.

His superhero antics at the dispensary earlier had only irritated me further.

“Is this the tradition or something?” He grunted the question, arms crossed, not actually looking at me.“Coming outside to wait for the soldiers to return from war?”

“Who looked at your light-skinned ass and named you Onyx?” I asked, instead of answering his question. I watched his face for a reaction and I wasn’t disappointed.
