“You’re deadass?”

He nodded. “Deadass. I mean, don’t get me wrong I ain’t saying it’s some usual kind of shit, I’m just saying that my father’s lessons have never led me wrong.Ever. Kind of wish you could’ve met him. You’reexactlythe kind of wild nigga he would have liked a lot.”

I blew out a sigh. “I think I would have liked to meet him too.”

Still tucking into his food, Blue asked, “What kind of relationship you have with your pops?”

I shrugged. “Never knew him. And my mother gave me away when I was…” I scoffed, shaking my head. “Old enough to know I was being given away.”

“So what, you were adopted? Foster care? Something like that?”

“Yeah. Something like that,” I said, thinking about how callingThe Gardenfoster carewas a stretch of the mightiest proportions.

Even the worst neglect would’ve been better than what I’d faced at the hands of the Belrose family.

Blue shook his head. “You ain’t got to be cool about the shit with me, man. I know there’s some shit with you and the tattoo. Ace, and all of them killer-looking bitches she rolls with.” He laughed. “I see the shit. I just like being alive, so I don’t be asking questions. What is it, some secret society shit or something?”

“I think you know I can’t say too much,” I said, even though… at this point, was that even the truth? The Gardendidn’t exist anymore, so whose secrets was I keeping anymore?

Other than my former peers?

Nobody that deserved it, for damn sure.

“Ay, honestly I appreciate that you have a code you live by,” Blue said, pulling me from my thoughts. “That shit is important. As long as you understand thatIhave a code I live by too. I’m bringing you in on this shit based on a gut feeling, but if it goes left?” He tossed his hands up. “I’ma do what I gotta do. I know, you’re John Wick in this bitch.” He chuckled. “And I respect that, but I ain’t no slouch myself. And don’t let Tati be nearby. She ain’t a killer, but don’t push her. She knows what to do.”

I lifted an eyebrow. “Which is?”

“Aim for the head and empty the clip.”

I nodded. “Can’t argue with that.”

“Can’t argue with what?” Tati said, breezing into the kitchen looking somehoweven betternow that she was dressed, in slim fit jeans and a gauzy yellow cropped shirt that showed off a teasing sliver of soft skin and a pierced belly button. If that wasn’t enough, it hung off her shoulders too, barely containing her titties.

“Well damn, you coming like that today, huh?” Blue asked, chuckling.

“Well, when you need to be on somebody’s good side in a meeting, you’ve got to come correct.”

“Okay, I feel like I’m missing something,” I spoke up, interested in what the hell kind of meetingthatoutfit was coming correct for.

Blue chuckled. “We’re supposed to be going to go see theRenegados. We need to know what side they’re going to fall on in this thing. I feel like we can make a comfortable guess, but I don’t want to make any assumptions. I want an ally. And Manuel Rojas – their president – has a thing for Tati.”

“He sure does.” Tati laughed, flipping her braids over shoulder. “All the boys do. I told you, Jake Lincoln wants to make mixed babies with me, talking about a damn alliance, I ain’t dumb.”

I pulled my head back. “That white boy I almost fucked up?”

Tati nodded. “Mmmhmm. I think that’s why Blue wants me at this meeting, give Manuel something to look at.”

“You’re a damn mess,” Blue told her. “If anybody elsecalled you whathecalls you, you’d be ready to fight,” he said.

“They don’t say it like he does,” she insisted, grabbing her laptop to pack away. “Seductora de chocolate,” she purred, sticking her tongue out. “Grande!” she added, rolling therbefore she laughed.

“Big sexy chocolate,” Blue laughed. “That’s a turn on for you?”

“I ain’t say all of that, it’s just that little reverence he be putting on it, while he looks like he does.” Tati giggled. “I like hearing it!”

“You just make sure you don’t like it too much. Don’t give his assanysteam,” Blue warned.

”I’m good, first of all. And he’s not trying nothing in front of you.”
