“I consider it good negotiation skills,” he smiled.

There was no point in playing hard to get. I wanted to see him again. “Well, you cooked for me last night, so why don’t I cook for you tonight? This way you can just relax.”

“I don’t consider burning steaks, actually succeeding at cooking. And you mentioned having plenty of work as well. Why don’t we both take the night off and let someone else do all the cooking and cleaning?” he suggested.

He was being so thoughtful and correct. My offering to cook wasn’t realistic, not with the job I’d just accepted. I could afford some time off, but not too much. At least not this week. It was like the ‘hurry up and wait’ situation I get into all the time. Schedule and order, then wait for it all to fall into place.

“I’d like that as long as we make it someplace lowkey and local.”

“I had promised you seafood the other day, and that didn’t work out either. But there is a local place that has been serving the best fish and fries for a hundred years,” he said.

“I know exactly where you’re talking about. It’s delicious, but a treat my arteries only allow me once a month,” I said, knowing the food was fantastic, but greasy.

“Is it a date?” he asked.

“It is. There is a line of people who are eyeing us for this table” I informed him. He didn’t even turn to look.

“Let them wait. I’m enjoying talking to you,” he said.

I smiled. “That’s great but, we both better start eating or neither of us will be able to take a break for dinner tonight,” I warned.

“Very true.” He picked up one of my fries and ate it. “Oh, I should’ve ordered some of these myself.”

“Help yourself. I should’ve gotten a small order anyway.”

Sam picked up another fry and held it out to me. “I’m sure we can polish this off together.”

Was he actually going to feed me that French fry? When he didn’t remove his hand, I opened my mouth and bit the fry.

“You’re right. They’re good. Now quit distracting me and let’s eat,” I said, using my teachers’ tone.

He grinned. “Yes ma’am.” Giving me a playful wink and doing as I instructed.

We chatted a little for the rest of the meal, but not so much. For both of us, work was important, and something we took seriously.

Playtime will have to wait.
