“She ordered the special,” the waitress giggled.

“I didn’t know you had any,” Sam replied, cocking a brow.

“Just today,” she replied.

“What is it? Maybe I’ll try it,” Sam said.

She giggled again and said, “Sorry, she ordered the last one.” Then she turned back to me and said, “Besides the special, is there something else I can get you?”

“A roast beef, large fry and a diet soda, please,” I said, trying not to laugh. I loved this waitress. Not so sure Sam felt the same. He looked so confused. Hope you stay that way, because I don’t want you to know what we’re laughing at. When she left, I said, “Funny bumping into you here. It sounds like you come here a lot.”

“Daily for lunch might make me a regular,” he said. “How about you?”

“I’ve come here several times, but usually during off hours, when they are not so busy,” I said.

“What brings you in today?” he asked.

“I had an appointment not far from here. Figured I’d grab lunch before heading home to start working on their request.”

“Another spice room in the making?” he questioned.

I didn’t hide what I did for a living, but somehow discussing it with Sam in the diner was…awkward.

“Let’s not talk about me. What about you? Are you working in the area?” I asked.

He nodded. “A tree came down in the storm last week and damaged a stone wall. I’m rebuilding it.”

“Are you sure you have time to sit and have lunch with me, because that sounds like a huge job,” I said. Even though I don’t know any masons, I’ve seen enough of them working in my neighborhood.

“It’s just lunch. Whether I eat it here or in my truck, what’s the difference?”

“If you say so. I know what it’s like running your own business. An hour here and there can set you behind on work.” An entire weekend off did it for me.

“I’ll get it done.” The waitress brought over our food and Sam asked, “What about the special she ordered?”

The waitress winked at me and said, “She’s already got it.”

She walked away from the table, and I knew my cheeks were red. Please don’t ask.

“What was that all about?” he asked.

“It’s…nothing,” I said.

“I come here every day, remember. You might as well tell me, because she’s definitely going to tell me tomorrow,” he warned.

I took a sip of my soda then explained. “She asked me what I wanted, and at that very moment I saw you enter. For some reason, your name came out of my mouth instead of my order.”

He looked at me for a moment, then smiled. “Damn. This is the first time I’ve ever been on the menu.”

My cheeks burned even hotter. “I hadn’t meant it like that.”

“Are you sure? From where I’m sitting, you ordered something, and it’s been delivered. Here I am, at your table,” he teased.

“Sam, stop. You’re not helping,” I stated.

“I guess I can behave but only if you agree to have dinner with me,” he said.

“Isn’t that blackmail?” I asked.
