Sam

I know stopping in on her was probably a bad idea, but when we spoke last night, after making love, she had mentioned that she’d be so busy today she wasn’t even going to get dressed. That meant she probably wasn’t going to stop to eat lunch either.

Since she seemed to enjoy the roast beef yesterday, I figured why not have another one today. At least that’s how I function. I ate them every day during the week. The waitress said I should try something new. I asked her what was wrong with knowing what I liked? Some people don’t get that. They grow bored so easily. That’s not me.

I walked up to her door and rang the bell. When it opened it wasn’t Randi who answered. Instead, a woman about ten years younger or so was standing there holding a twenty-dollar bill.

“Hey, that doesn’t look like pizza to me,” she said.

“It’s not,” I replied, holding two small paper bags. “Is Randi here?” I asked.

She shook her head. “Nope. She had to run out for an errand. Hope she already paid for whatever she ordered, because I’m not buying her lunch. Mostly because she said she wasn’t buying mine.”

I could take the food back with me, but I still didn’t know if Randi had eaten. “It has been covered. Do you think you can give it to her when she returns?”

“Sure, but if my pizza doesn’t arrive soon, I might just have to eat it for her,” she laughed. Then she looked past me at my truck, then back to me. “Hey, you don’t look like a deliveryman. What’s your name?”

“Sam. What’s yours?” I asked.

She laughed again. “Sam.”

“That’s what I said. But what’s your name?” I asked a second time.

“My name is Sam, or Samantha as my sister Randi has decided to start calling me since she met you. She says it’s too confusing. Us having the same name you know.” She looked me up and down and added, “I’d never get us confused. You’re very easy on the eyes,” she stated.

I should’ve guessed that this was Randi’s younger sister. And boy Randi, you’re right. She’s something else.

“Nice meeting you Samantha. And thank you for giving Randi the food for me,” I said.

“Why don’t you come inside and wait for her? I’m sure she’d be thrilled to see you.”

I could see the plotting going on in her eyes. It’s the same look of trouble that I’d seen in Bob’s when he’s about to get involved in something he shouldn’t.

“Thanks, but I must get back to work. Besides, she wasn’t expecting me and I don’t want her rushing back for no reason,” I stated.

“Oh, you were coming to surprise her. How romantic. Or were you hoping to pick up where you two left off last night?” she asked.

Damn it. You are a female version of Bob.

Not responding to her probing question, I said, “Have a good day.” I didn’t wait and turned heading back down the walkway to my truck. I hopped right in and pulled away before Samantha thought about coming down trying to talk me into staying.

I didn’t even get a chance to return to work before my cellphone rang. The caller ID showed it was Randi.

“Hi there. How are you doing?” I asked.

“Disappointed that I missed you. If I’d known you would be stopping by, I’d have waited to run my errands.”

“That’s okay. I really should’ve called instead of just stopping by,” I said.

“Was there something you forgot?” she asked.

“No. Just thought we might have lunch together,” I said.

“Oh, that’s sweet of you. Where did you want to meet?” she asked.

Didn’t Samantha tell her that I dropped off lunch for her? She was talking like she had no clue. If I let her know, then she would have no reason to come meet with me and I really want to see her.
