“The food is great. Is that enough of a reason?” Bob asked.

“Is that all?” Sam prodded.

I was grateful he was trying to take the lead. I was going to be blunt and more forceful. The last thing I wanted was for Samantha and I to argue and drive a wedge between us. Even if you tell me you’re in love with Bob, I won’t let that come between us. We’re sisters. I will love you no matter what.

Bob turned to Samantha and said, “You should just tell them. Then at least we can enjoy dinner without being hounded with questions.”

Samantha sighed. “You’re right.” She turned to me and said, “Bob and I eloped and are married.”

“What?!” Sam and I both said, in shock.

Samantha laughed and said, “No. I’m only joking.”

“Not funny,” I snarled out.

Bob looked equally surprised by Samantha’s announcement. “Warn me next time you’re going to say something like that. You almost gave me a heart attack.”

“I figured if I start with that comment, then anything I say after will sound so much better,” Samantha said.

“How about just the truth this time,” I suggested. Because Bob isn’t the only one whose heart skipped a beat or two.

“I…can’t work for you any longer. I found a job,” she said.

“That’s awesome. I knew you would. What will you be doing?” I asked.

“Marketing analyst. It’s a great job, pays well and exactly what I’ve been looking for. I couldn’t be happier,” she said.

“Congratulations,” Sam said.

“Thanks. I start in two weeks and I have so much to do beforehand,” she replied.

“I’ll take you out clothes shopping if you’d like.” I had no idea if she had kept all her office attire when she left her other job. Back then she had sworn never to work in an office again, but I knew one day that would change.

“No. I’ll shop when I get settled,” she said.

Settled? What hadn’t she told me yet?

“You have an apartment,” I reminded her.

“Yes, but not one in California.”

“California? You’re moving to California?” I asked, stunned for the second time.

“Yes I am,” she said.

“You don’t know anyone in California.”

“I live there,” Bob said.

That’s not helping.

I looked back to Samantha and said, “I’m sure you can find a marketing job around here. There’s no reason to move so far away.” From me.

“I know I could, but this is the one I want. And I’m excited to relocate. I’ve lived in Rhode Island all my life. I’m so ready for a change.”

“But what about me?” I asked.

“You have Sam,” she replied.
