“That doesn’t mean I still don’t need you.” We might bicker but at the end of the day, we were more than just sisters, we were friends.

“You can hire another receptionist,” she joked.

I shot her a warning look. “This isn’t funny. I mean it. California isn’t nearby. When will I see you?”

“Whenever you want. I mean, you do realize that they have flights out to California several times a day. And since you work for yourself, then you can come as often as you like. I’ll also have vacation time and promise to come back at least one week a year,” she said.

“One week?”

Samantha went on to tell us about her job and where it was located.

“I know that place. It’s about a four-hour drive from where my son and family live,” Sam said.

“See Randi. People travel to visit family all the time,” Samantha said.

“Not as much as I would like to,” Sam replied. He turned to me and said, “I know my son has been asking for me to come more frequently. Maybe we can start traveling and spending more time there together. See all the family. What do you think?”

I think I’m in shock.

“I guess we’ll have to do something,” I sighed.

Samantha leaned over and hugged Bob. “Thanks Bob. I couldn’t have done this without you.”

He smiled. “Glad I could help. Now let’s order, because I’m hungry.”

The rest of the dinner was spent listening to Samantha talk about her new job. It became evident that she’d given this a lot of thought. It was what she wanted, and most of all, she was happy about it. That’s all I really wanted for her. It was my own selfish need to want her close that was making this hard.

When Sam and I got back to my house, we sat on the couch and pretended to watch television. Sam picked up the remote and turned it off.

“I think we should talk.”

“About what Samantha said?” I asked. He nodded. “I wasn’t prepared for that announcement.”

“I can tell. But it might be a good thing.”

“Why? So you and I can have more alone time together?” I questioned. Sam and Samantha were getting along much better, but at times, I could still feel a little bit of jealousy from Samantha on how much time I was with Sam.

“Randi, I’m going to be sixty years old before I know it. What I do for work is hard physically. I can still do it, but I’m okay with slowing down how much I do. I’ve set myself up to be able to retire early.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I asked.

“Because from what you told me, you have done the same thing. I know neither of us are the type who could sit home all day, but we can slow down some. Take more time off. See the world. And maybe spend time in California with the ones we love.”

“Are you saying we should move there?” I asked.

“I’m not sure about that yet, but we definitely can take more time off from work. I make my own schedule and so do you. Let’s take advantage of that. It might sound like a crazy idea, but I had a dream of getting an RV and traveling cross country. Granted it would take a lot longer than a plane but think about everything we could see along the way. What do you think?” he asked.

What he was suggesting was doable on my part. I didn’t need to take on so much work. And without Samantha here advertising my business all over the place, I should be able to slow down, which I wanted to do anyway.

“I’ve always wanted to travel. Are you sure you can stand being cooped up with me in a motorhome for all that time?” I asked.

He smiled. “Randi, I’d live in a tent if it meant being with you.”

I wrinkled my nose and said, “I love you Sam, but I draw the line at no indoor plumbing. Sorry.”

“Then an RV it is. What do you say we take tomorrow off from work, and go do a little shopping ourselves?”

“For an RV?” I asked.
