“Go rest, big guy.”

I’d punch you if you weren’t the healer. And that was how Drew showed love. I chuckled.

For the next few hours, Drew gave Jazz blood and rested while she continued to labor. She was tiring quickly, so I’d taken to using my power to relieve some of her pain. We’d moved through Carmon, Adam, the Vampires, and Chris’ crews in the blood circuit.

Nate was on his way up when a red flag popped in my head. One of the babies had a heart rate that was rising. I rose from where I sat in a corner by myself concentrating on my power.

“What’s wrong?” Jazz was resting on the bed, too weak to walk now.

“One of the babes has an elevated heart rate. I need to touch you to examine further.”

Jazz’s worry showed in her elevated heart rate too, but I ignored it and checked the babies. The one who was struggling was the female. I tapped more of my power to check on her, but a power slammed into mine, pushing me back and onto my butt.

“What the—"

I looked from Jazz’s stomach to Drew, whose eyes were wide like mine.

“Good luck with your daughter, man. She’s already got a temper, and she’s one strong little thing.”

He grinned, happiness radiating between him and Jazz.

Life.

Yes, Nephew.

She has your element.

My aunt sounded pleased when she responded,Yes, she does. She is a seer.

Don’t we already have one of those?

Yes, but things are lining up how they should. That is what you need to know. You also need to know that the Mindolin will know when they are born. He wants those babies.

Dread crawled up my spine. Drew looked at me as he felt the emotions I was unable to contain.

Jeff, what is wrong?

Jeff, is everything okay with Jazz and the babies?

I ignored my brothers.

Life, will we have any protections from you and the other Elementals? Or are we on our own?

Your mother is doing what she can to protect you and the children for the time being. Should she be unable to keep that protection up, we will be your next line of defense. Time is almost out, Nephew. Find that traitor and get the treaty made. We need a unified front.

Okay, but tonight I’m focusing on the babies.

Yes, which is why you need to look again.

No way. She already pummeled me with her power.

Jefferson.

I couldn’t threaten Life, but she’d always called me by the name I preferred. So, I stood and took Jazz’s hand back in mine. The little girl had used a substantial amount of her power up when she’d zapped me. She was weaker now, but not in a dangerous state. Her heart rate was also lower. And since she didn’t have all her power now, I could see plainly what Life wanted me to see.

“Oh my gosh.”

“What?” Drew was going to take my head off if I didn’t speak, but I was speechless.
