"No, that's not..."

"Oliver." A shrill voice sounded from across the room. I blinked and turned to it, along with Oliver. I could feel him steeling next to me. "Oliver, there you are." A tall, statuesque blonde headed toward us. She had eyes only for Oliver. I wasn't even sure if she'd noticed me. "I have been looking all over for you."

"Have you?” he asked with a small smile.

"Yes. In fact..."

"Diana, I want to..." He grabbed my arm.

"Oliver. We should go in."

"Diana, I want to introduce you to someone." Then she looked over at me, her blue eyes cold as she assessed me.

"Who are you?" she asked in a distasteful voice.

“I’m Rosalie.”

“Rosa-who?” She stared back at Oliver. “Who is this, darling?"

Darling, I thought to myself. Why was she calling Oliver darling?

"Diana, this is Rosalie. She's Foster's younger sister."

"Oh, the one that didn't have a job and was begging to come and stay with you." She looked at me again, dismissively. "I see you made it, but darling, word of advice, we're in New York City now, not Atlantic City. You really shouldn't dress like a hoochie."

"What!?" I said, my jaw dropping. Who was this bitch? "And how do you two know each other?" I asked, staring at him with wide eyes. Rosalie pressed her hand against his arm and looked back at me with a smile.

"So darling, you haven't told her about us?" I froze. My eyes met Oliver's, and I could see a look of contrition in his eyes reflected at me.

"Rosalie, I was wanting to tell you, this is Diana."

"Yeah, I got her name," I said, "And who is she exactly?"

"I'm his partner," she said with a small smile. "And I hope one day to be much more." My jaw dropped as I looked at Oliver for confirmation. This couldn't be real. Could it? He had a girlfriend, and he hadn't told me?

"But that's not exactly true, Diana," he said quickly. Rosalie, Diana and I, well, we dated for a little bit, but we're not in a relationship now."

"Only because I told you I didn't want to be in a relationship right now," she said with a small tinkle. Her blue eyes turned to me, cold. I almost shriveled up on the spot. "But now that I've had a couple of months to think about it, I do think it could be a good idea for us to move in together and further our relationship. Now, come on, dear. I was just speaking to Kramer, and not only are they awarding you with a prize but they're officially giving you a fellowship."

I stared at Oliver and tried not to let the tears fall from my eyes. Fifteen minutes ago, I'd been the happiest woman in the world. And now I felt like the world was about to end. I bit down on my lower lip and stared at Oliver, hoping he would deny it, but he didn't say anything. He let out a deep sigh and ran his hands through his hair. "Diana, go and let Kramer know I'll be right there."

"But, darling, I..."

"Please," he said.

"Fine, but don't be more than a couple of minutes, or I'll come back and get you."

"Okay," he said. He looked at me and shook his head. "I'm sorry, Rosalie. That's what I was trying to tell you. Me and Diana, well, it's complicated."

Chapter12

Oliver

The look Rosalie was giving me should have turned me to stone. I felt like shit. I couldn't believe Diana had found us and been the one to drop this bombshell. I knew it sounded worse than it was. I knew from the look on Rosalie's face that she was absolutely horrified and disgusted with me. I mean, the facts of the matter were true. Diana and I had dated but only for six months. We'd broken up because we'd both been really busy with work, and while she fit in my circle, she wasn't someone who lit my body on fire.

We continued seeing each other casually once a month or so. I guess some people would've called it friends with benefits. I had suggested to her that we make a decision to either get back together or move on. I wasn't the sort of guy who was used to casual sex. She had told me she'd let me know. I hadn't thought much of it until Foster had told me that Rosalie was going to come and stay with us. As soon as I'd heard that, Diana had been the furthest thing from my mind.

I'd been excited. I'd wanted to see Rosalie, talk to her, figure out what had happened all those years ago, see if she hated me, if she was disgusted by me, and as soon as we'd seen each other in the airport, the sparks had flown. I smiled to myself. She thought I hadn't recognized her when I'd gone up to that other lady, but I'd just been playing a joke on her. I was going to tell her, but she'd been so infuriated and incensed that I figured that hadn't been the time to let her know. And now, now she was infuriated with me yet again.
