“What is he doing? Oh my God, he’s doing what I made a joke about earlier.” I laughed, then stepped into the street. “Bravo, Mr. Hawthorne. It’s about time.”

“Hello there, ma’am, did you get a flier?” Sawyer stopped in front of me. “One more time folks, Jade Campbell did not push me in the water.”

I reached for the bullhorn but he held it higher so I couldn’t get it. “Okay, you can stop now. I think they got the message.”

“Hold on, let me check. Has everyone gotten the message now?” he asked over the bullhorn again. “Give me a round of applause if you have heard the message clearly.”

I had to laugh. This town hadn’t had anything this exciting in a long time, and everyone was smiling. It felt good to see them smile.

I grabbed the bullhorn when he lowered his guard. “Thanks for letting Mr. Hawthorne entertain you all tonight and, while I’ve got you listening, a bigthank youto everyone checking in on the Admiral.”

“Wait a minute. I plan a big gesture and you steal my bullhorn and finish out the night?” Sawyer lifted the bullhorn to his mouth. “Thank you for coming out to hear me.”

And there’s that arrogance again.

I looked around at people watching us to see what we would do next. “That was very funny, and pretty good of you to remember what I said.”

“A truce, then?” He put his hand out to shake. “Friends now?”

“Yes, a truce.” I took his out-reached hand. “Friends? I don’t know yet.”

He took my hand and immediately held our hands up in the air, then bowed and kissed my hand. The town folks went crazy, clapping and cheering. Sawyer waved for the kids to come over so he could return the one boy’s bike to him.

“Here’s the money I promised of you.” He handed each kid a twenty-dollar bill. “You sir, I owe forty for doing the video for me.”

There we go with money again. Did he say video?

“I wanted to let you know that I’m hiring a band from New York to come to the island. I feel bad that I stole Allen’s entertainment, and I don’t want to make you come over two times a night.” Sawyer motioned for me to step onto the sidewalk. “I also compensated him monetarily for the loss of revenue.”

“You’ve certainly thought of everything, haven’t you?” I crossed my arms in front of me. “Thank you for all of this. Now I have to get to my father. Here’s the keys to your boat.”

“Are you still picking up the band tonight?” He put the key in his pocket.

“The band has my boat, so they can come back themselves. Joe’s a good boater. I trust him.” I looked over to Lucy and Bobby watching from a few feet away.

“Do you think you could show me all the features of the boat? Maybe in the morning when I bring my aunt back?” He stood looking at me with his hands in his pockets.

Who is this guy in front of me right now?

“I can, as long as my father is doing well enough to be left,” I finally replied. “Good night, Mr. Hawthorne. Oh, and delete that video.”

“The name is Sawyer, if you please.” Sawyer called out as he walked away whistling. “The video is mine forever.”

Chapter 50

Sawyer

The apology went well, I thought. I was feeling pretty good about it. Now I could go on and pick a bride with a clear conscience. I couldn’t have my wife coming into town hearing rumors about me being a jerk, after all.

“Nothing you say right now could make me mad, so go ahead, Ash. What’s up?” I said into my cell.

“Since when do I make you mad? You’re changing, man,” Ash whined into the phone. “I was calling to say we decided to hang out on the hut side tonight and make a bonfire.”

“Sounds good, what about dinner? And the band?” I asked, reaching the marina.

“That’s the second part of the plan. They’re going to bring the yacht around. Captain Jim says the water level is safe,” Asher went on. “Marcus will cook dinner on the yacht, then we can eat on the beach by the fire.”

“That works for me. How did you get to the hut side, by the way?” I wondered.
