ChapterNine

Ariana sipped her coffee, holding it with both hands. That didn’t keep it from shaking.

“What’s wrong?” Damon asked.

She set the mug down slowly, holding it steady. “Other than my best friend being missing and her husband having a reason to kill her?”

“I mean, did something else happen? You seem even more upset now.”

Ariana looked away.

“What happened?”

The server arrived with their meals. Ari’s favorite food barely looked appealing.

She thanked the server and asked a few random questions about the menu, hoping to distract Damon.

After the server left, he turned back to Ariana. “Did you confront Boone?”

“No.”

“Then what?” Damon asked. “He didn’t confront you, did he?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

His face flushed red. “What did Boone do?”

Ariana’s face heated. She hated to tell him, but they didn’t keep secrets.

Ever.

She took a deep breath. “He caught me following him.”

“And?”

“He expressed his desire for me to stop.”

“I’ll bet.”

She nodded and dug into her food. Could barely taste it.

“Is that all you’re going to tell me?” he asked.

“He also made me delete the photos from my phone.”

“Made you?” Damon’s mouth formed a straight line.

“It doesn’t matter.” She shrugged like it was no big deal. “I already texted the most incriminating ones to the detective.”

“I don’t like this.”

“He’s a jerk. We already knew that.”

“I don’t think you should follow him anymore. We need to be in this together.”

She could hardly disagree after the way Boone acted in the parking lot. “You’re right. I just didn’t want to wake you, but next time I will.”

“Thank you.” Damon’s expression softened. “I don’t trust that man farther than I could throw a truck.”
