Sophia turned, her expression withdrawn as she looked up at him.

“I told Lady Christiana that I wanted to go home. I didn’t want to have any awkward questions about my fainting spell, so I thought it would be best to leave.”

“What about your family?”

“They won’t even notice I’m gone. I doubt they’ll notice where I am until the morning.” Sophia shrugged. “They do that all the time. I’m used to it.”

“Nobody should ever be used to being ignored by her family.”

“Well, that’s how things are with mine. You’ll probably do the same once you’re married to Aimee.”

Thomas stared.

“You think I would forget about you as soon as I’m married?”

“I wouldn’t be surprised. Aimee will be demanding all your attention, just as she is now. She will make sure you forget everyone else to give her what she wants.”

“That’s not going to happen.”

“Isn’t it? Our parents seem to be very sure about it.” Sophia shook her head. “I don’t think you can argue with them. This marriage is all but finalised, as far as they’re concerned. And Aimee … well, let’s just say she’s been going around the house calling herself Mrs Ford and Lady Hawksworth.”

Thomas felt nauseous hearing that.

“She’s been doing what?”

“You let her down, and you’re going to regret it. Aimee is very determined about this.”

Thomas knew about that but hearing it from Sophia made it feel like a noose around his neck. And he could feel it tightening. He shook his head.

“Nothing’s certain yet. And I won’t let anyone forget about you.”

Sophia blinked.

“You think you have any say over what my parents do and say? If it’s not part of their narrative, they don’t listen. I’ve not been part of their narrative for years.”

“How can your parents be so cold?”

“I don’t know, and I will never understand their motivations. But that’s nothing to do with me.” Sophia sighed and beckoned for him to leave. “Just go back to your future wife. You shouldn’t be here alone with me.”

“I don’t care.”

Sophia froze. It took a moment for Thomas to realise what he had just said. Now there was something heavy in the air between them, and Thomas could feel it prickling his skin. Sophia was staring at him with wide eyes.

“What? What did you say?”

“I said that I don’t care.” Thomas didn’t stop from starting towards her and grasping her head in his hands, savouring the soft locks under his fingers. “I don’t care.”

As he kissed her, he expected Sophia to push him away and slap him. After all, he had just kissed her without warning, and he shouldn’t be. But now she was here, and he couldn’t help himself. He wanted to kiss her.

He had to kiss her.

For a second, Sophia was limp, and she didn’t respond. Then she kissed him back, allowing him to take charge but showing just as much passion. Her hands gripped onto the lapels of his jacket, seeming to pull herself up for more. Groaning, Thomas let go of her head and wrapped his arms around her. He shuddered, feeling her in his embrace. This felt like the most natural thing in the world to him to kiss her.

She felt so good in his arms. Like she was meant to be there.

Then he felt Sophia pushing against his chest. She was most insistent, breaking the kiss, and Thomas eased back as Sophia turned her head away.

“Let me go.”
