This time it’s the metal cuffs on Kayne’s wrists and ankles that go off.

The charge is so powerful I could smell his flesh being singed. But Kayne stands there and takes it. He doesn’t make a sound even though his body is jolting with razor-sharp spears of electricity decimating him.

I automatically go to him.

“Do you want to kill him, Sophia? If I turn the dial up once more, no human, not even your bodyguard will be able to withstand it. He’ll go into cardiac arrest and you and I will watch him die.”

I stop dead. Tears streaming from my eyes. I want to beg this man to stop, but the love of my life, of my heart and soul and universe, is Kayne Langley and Kayne doesn’t beg for mercy.

“Please don’t make me kill him, Sophia,” Roger says behind me. “I have so many fun things planned for the two of you, that it would make me very mad if you make me kill him prematurely. All you have to do is listen to me. Now come Sit. Eat. You’re going to need your strength.”

I turn around and face Roger. He stops his cruel torture of Kayne and now I know it is nothing compared to the zaps of energy he used on me.

I have never had any murderous thoughts before but I can imagine myself killing Roger Thompson.

“One other thing. If you look at your bodyguard even once more, which I think is rude for a woman of your caliber to do when she is on a dinner date with another man, I will be pressing this little button again, for longer.”

I take the seat next to him. His cologne makes me sick. It’s too much and mingled with the smell of sweat adds to my nausea.

His suit is pristine on the outside. His hair slicked back. His disturbingly lean face is clean shaved. But there’s a maniacal quality to his eye, something I hadn’t noticed before, hadn’t paid enough attention to him to notice.

“Why?”

He smiles. “Why are you here, you mean? Well, there was an explosion. “Well, all right. It was me. I was responsible for the explosion in Langley’s apartment building.”

I swallow involuntarily. Horror coats my eyes but I try my hardest to remain stoic. I can’t give this man any emotion. I won’t. He doesn’t deserve it.

“I had to bring down the whole building to get to him on the top, but it worked out well because I didn’t want to kill you guys. Oh, no, I wanted you both very much alive.”

I school my features to show nothing of the relief I feel glowing inside me that no matter what, Kayne is alive. And as long as he is alive, there’s hope of us getting out of here. I just need Kayne to be alive. That is all.

“And so now here we are. At last. Just the three of us. Soon there will be only just the two of us. And who those two people are will remain to be seen. I will guarantee that I’m one of those last ones to stand. I would like the other person to be you, Sophia. We can be good together. Just us.”

He reaches across the table and touches my hand. It takes everything inside me not to pull my hand back. I don’t have to look at Kayne to feel the deep possessive growls that emanate from him despite the gag in his mouth.

Roger’s threat falls by the wayside. I don’t take stock of it. I want to claw his eyes out instead.

“If I can’t have you, then I shall have Langley. Either you will be my wife. Or Langley will be my slave. Those are the only two options and an important decision for both you and your bodyguard to decide on.

“But enough of that for now. You have been through a lot. You need to gather your strength for the fun and games I have planned ahead for both you and your bodyguard. I wonder who’ll win. But a good meal will help.

He shakes out a napkin and tucks it into the collar of his shirt. From behind him a pair of servers arrive. It’s only then that I notice the whole room is lined with armed men.

Roger isn’t as confident as he makes out to be. Take away his armed guards and that watch on his wrist and he’ll be nothing but a boy too scared to face Kayne alone.

He orders me to eat. Threatens to send Kayne into another electric shock frenzy if I don’t follow his instructions.

The soup feels as if I’m sipping fuel from a spoon. The steak tastes like poison and the dessert is vile as I force it down my throat.

I dare not look at Kayne. I won’t risk him getting electrocuted again, but I feel his eyes on me.

His gaze has removed the dress that isn’t mine. The underwear too. He sees me naked, in my skin. His caresses are like hot streaks of bliss that I curl into with ferocious and desperate need.

I know the sight of Roger touching me destroys him. I know what he’s going to do to Roger when he gets his hands on him.

“How long have I been here?” I ask.

“A week. You were placed in a coma while you healed from the effects of the blast. Don’t worry, Your Highness, you had the best medical care in the world.”
