I want to ask about Kayne’s injuries but I refrain.

“Right. That was lovely, wasn’t it? Consider this our first date. Now,” he rose from the chair and chucked his napkin onto the plate. “Music,” he shouted and a symphony of sound blasted through from the walls.

“Don’t make me have to kill your boyfriend, for a dance, Your Highness.”

I don’t think I ever hated someone as much as I did Roger Thompson at that moment. Pure encompassing hatred surged through and shone through my eyes. I know that because he looked taken aback when he glanced at me.

But that look cost me more than it was worth delivering.

My alarm grows like bile inside me. A group of men charges toward Kayne at the same moment that Roger pulls me toward him.

His hand feels clammy on my waist and I stop myself from trying to jerk away. My eyes remain fixed on Kayne.

The men undo the chains binding his arms at his side. Roger swirls me around and I lose my focus on him, but I twist my neck and tears roll down my face.

They take the chains and hook them up to the ceiling, raising his arms above his head.

Roger laughs as he continues to swing me around. My balance is off and he’s propping me up like a lifeless doll. He gets mad at having to do this and then he’s swiping his finger across his watch.

I die a million deaths on the inside when Kayne’s whole body starts to rattle. The men start punching him and kicking him. His face. His stomach. His sides. Blood flies from his face, and the crunch of bones echoes in my mind. Roger dances faster, his hold on me digging into my ribs. His breath is horribly hot on my face.

“Please, please, stop,” I cry, my hands clutching onto Roger’s arms. “Please. I’ll do whatever you want. Please, please stop.”

I’m sobbing my heart out to a man with no soul.

“I’ll do whatever you want. Please, just stop.”

Roger stops and lifts a hand and the beatings cease.

“You will do whatever I want already, my pretty? But I think this date needs a little more exciting entertainment. Something to speed things up a little.”

With his hand around my arm, bruising me as he spins me around to face Kayne, he laughs at the sight before him.

I can’t bear to look at Kayne. To see him this way.

“Take the gag out,” Roger instructs and one of his men removes the ball from Kayne’s mouth.

“Now. Answer yes or no, Langley. Nothing more, nothing less. “You must first agree to fight two of my most prized fighters. Gary, also known as The Bull and well Alligator, over there, that’s just his name.”

“No,” I whisper. Kayne can barely hold his head up. He’s bruised and battered and that’s only on the outside. The shocks to his system on the inside have taken their own toll.

“You must agree to fight them and win and I will reward you ten seconds, say fifteen seconds to be close enough to her, you can smell that delicious cunt of hers, but well if you die… it’s game over. Yes. Or no?”

Chapter Four

Sophia

I shake my head frantically. I don’t want this. They’ve beaten him up, they’ve put him at a huge disadvantage. The men that Roger wants him to fight are huge and in their peak form. The fight won’t be fair.

“Yes,” Kayne answers without hesitating, without a flicker of doubt. He lifts his head and he stares right into Roger’s eyes when he answers.

Oh god.

The sound of his voice thrills every part of me despite the tremendous duress under which I am in.

“Kayne. No,” I plea with him. He doesn’t take his gaze off Roger. Roger can’t hide his surprise that Kayne agreed.

It’s all wrong and…I don’t know what to do.
