Bentley rolled his eyes. “Make me feel bad about it, why don’t you?”

“I’m not trying to do that. I’m just trying to get you to talk. There’s no need for you to feel bad. It doesn’t matter if you disturb us. Becca lives here; we’ve got all the time in the world.”

For some reason, that bothered Bentley. He couldn’t imagine having a woman around permanently. It wasn’t something he’dgiven any consideration to before. But for the first time, he wanted to know how it would feel.

“Go on, tell me,” said Jacob. “What’s bothering you?”

Bentley took a deep breath before he spoke. “Actually, it’s about Becca. At least, about the two of you. How … I mean … I guess I just want to know how you knew or even just when you knew, that things were different with her.”

“Whoa! What are you telling me? I thought that you were finally going to start going out and having some fun.”

“I am.”

“So, why the question?”

Bentley checked his watch; he needed to get going. He was supposed to meet his mom and Russ and Russ’s daughter out on the deck at The Boathouse at eight-thirty. It was eight-twenty-five now.

“It doesn’t matter. How about I give you a call when I get back? Maybe we can get together, have a drink?”

“Absolutely, but don’t think you’re getting away that easily. You called me, I want to know what’s going on.”

“I will tell you at some point, but I have to go; I’m supposed to be meeting Mom and Russ.”

“So, talk to me as you go. Tell me on the way.”

Bentley went inside and closed the balcony door behind him before grabbing his wallet and key card and letting himself out of the room.

“Okay. It’s probably nothing, but it got me thinking.”

“I’m going to need more detail than that.”

He let out a short laugh. “Give me a minute. You know I’m here visiting Mom this weekend?”

“Yes. Oh! But last night you were at a loose end, right? Are you telling me …?”

“Yes.” Bentley jogged down the stairs. He really didn’t want to be late. He looked around and checked back over his shoulder before he spoke again. It was ridiculous, but he didn’t want anyone to overhear what he had to say next. “I met someone. She spent the night.”

Jacob laughed. “Good for you! Except, was it …? Good for you?”

“It was, maybe even too good. I’m just trying to figure out whether I don’t have the hang of this hooking up thing or whether she’s …” He didn’t even know how to finish that sentence. What was he trying to figure out? Whether Lizzie was someone he wanted to spend more time with? More than one night with? Even those two were very different propositions. Spending more than one night with her, in his mind, meant repeated one-nighters. Spending more time with her would mean something completely different. He frowned when he realized that was the option he was thinking of.

Jacob’s voice was serious when he spoke again. “I don’t think I’m going to be any use in helping you to figure it out. But, what I will say is that it sounds like you need to see her again before you can tell.”

“Yes, I think you’re right.” Bentley hurried across the reception area and jogged down the steps. “But for now, I’m going to have to go. I’m meeting Mom and Russ and I’m almost there.”

He scanned the deck of the restaurant and spotted them sitting at a table by the railing next to the water. He loved seeinghis mom so relaxed. Russ had hold of her hand, and they were smiling at each other.

His own smile faded when he saw Lizzie walking toward them. He hadn’t thought about that – that she might be around the resort today. Which was dumb of him really; there was no reason that she shouldn’t be.

“Are you still there?” Jacob asked.

“Yeah, sorry.”

“What’s wrong? You sound … Strange.”

Bentley’s heart started to hammer in his chest as he watched Lizzie smile as she neared his mom and Russ’s table. She knew them; it was obvious.

“Are you okay?”
