Air sighed, apparently no longer stunned by my act of violence. “It is a beautiful place even if there are rumors of danger here. Okay, they’re not rumors. For an untrained fighter, Bard’s Forest is a dangerous place. Or it was before the treaty.”

“Well, I think it’s time to make it a very peaceful place again.” My legs were a bit weak and my fire low, but I would make a difference in this world if it killed me.

“What’s the plan?” Grace folded her arms over her chest. Still seeing them in the colors of heat remained weird, but at least I could see.

A voice laughed from deep within the woods. “You are too weak, Lady Fire, to destroy me. I have the power of Lady Life behind me. No one can destroy us.”

My confidence wavered when my legs did, but a strong arm wrapped around the front of me and held me close to a massive chest.

I’ve got you, Brynn.

Adam, I need all the Elementals with heat. Fire, Lightning, Air, even Sylee who can heat water. If Earth can warm up the ground, I need them. I’ll handle a majority of the work, but I need heat.

“Don’t try to help her, Adam. You’ll only kill her.” The Mindolin laughed. “I knew you were working against me the entire time. Only I never pegged you to take Yavich from my side.”

“That’s what happens when you lie to people,Dad.” Adam threw sarcasm at the forest. Fear, fear for me, hit me through the bond. I’d told him before that he couldn’t base his choices off of me and my wellbeing. I wouldn’t be his weakness, and he couldn’t save me and allow a whole world to die. Even if the Mindolin spoke the truth, I would rather die than allow the world to rot around me and be infected by this creature’s evil disease.

The Mindolin laughed, but the sound was forced. People gathered on all sides of Adam and me. The air around us warmed, giving me more energy.

“She’s actually going to try this, is she?” The evil creature blew a gust of cold air at me, chilling me to the bone. Adam had to hold me tighter to keep me upright. “She’s as weak as a newborn babe. How pathetic of you all to stand with her. It’s embarrassing.”

Marcus,Adam growled at his uncle.Get Leo on his feet so he can help Brynn.

I’ll do what I can, but don’t count on a miracle. Lord Fire’s drained pretty good.

I couldn’t count on Lord Leo. Right now, I had my family, the people who cared for me more than my mother and father ever had, at my back.

Flames licked over my hand and stomach and anywhere Adam touched me. My mate, my husband and best friend, had become a human torch to give me the heat I needed to do this.

Don’t die on me.His voice was a low growl, and I smiled. I liked it when Adam was growly.

Closing my eyes, I focused on the living entity in the air of the forest. He was dank and cold, the Mindolin. Like a cough that’s deep in your chest and leaves you breathless.

Like the monster wolf-bears I’d just killed, I pushed my power into the living cells of the Mindolin. He had a body, yes, but his true being was attached to the forest. He’d hijacked the dwelling of another Lower Elemental and was living off that power. He could pretend all he wanted that he was the most powerful being around, outside of Life, that is, but he relied on the forest for too much strength. I could feel it in the way his cells clung to the trees and forest floor. Bard’s Forest gave him life. I planned to take that away.

“Everyone on your guard!” Carmon yelled when I shoved my power into the Mindolin.

I screamed, and my knees buckled at the cold I impacted with, but I couldn’t give up. Adam still held me, his skin ignited in a white-hot blaze. He couldn’t hold the fire for long, so I needed to hurry.

The Mindolin’s cold cells were like a black hole to my new sight. They absorbed my warmth, but then buried it with cold immediately.

Everyone needs to get as much heat as they can into that forest. On my cue, the temperature in the air around us warmed. Both Lady Airs did their duty. Lightning streaked through the sky and into the forest. Over and over it struck but didn’t hit anything. Zhaine and Chris had good aim.

Again, I pushed my power into the Mindolin’s cells. This time, he howled in anger, and maybe a bit of pain, and his cold couldn’t stomp on the heat I gave him. I could do this!

Out of the forest, glimmers flew at us. Before they reached us, my view was blocked by a large body.

Drew collapsed to his knees and then fell to the ground, face down. Ice knives stuck out of his back. Beside him, Tessa lay on the ground where she’d defended others taking on the Mindolin. Carmon and Sylee lay next to her, along with the Warlock and Vampire Overlord.

My family lay bleeding on the ground, maybe even dead, and the Mindolin laughed in the trees. My anger refilled, and I screamed in fury as every ounce of my power poured from me and into the trees.

The forest was vast, but I managed to cover every bit of it in Fire power. My vision became filled with yellow, then orange, and red lights as I stared into the woods beyond my small group. The Mindolin pushed back, but he had no hope.

Blood dripped from my nose and down my face. I’d had enough bloody noses as a child to recognize the sensation. My entire frame shook, and the only thing keeping me upright and conscious was Adam.

“I can’t,” I gulped in air. The temperature was hot and would bother the others, but it gave me a tiny amount of strength. However, that renewal with each breath wasn’t enough, and the Mindolin slowly began to beat me and cool his cells.

Everyone had given so much to this fight and, again, I’d let them down.
