Ruin’s frown fades. “I feel that way about Selene. She needs a support system, but people around here might use her to fuck with me.”

“Okay, so we’ll figure out how to set up one of those lady days for them. By the time I have the party at my place, they might be good friends.”

“Why even have a party?”

Checking my phone, I shrug. “I want Landry to know the club.”

“She will over time.”

“No, she needs to understand the life I lead. How we’re not just a social club. She understands on a shallow level. I mean, I killed her fucking husband. She knows I’m not a weekend biker. But I need her to feel on a gut level who we are. That way, when she says she gets it, I’ll know she isn’t blowing smoke up my ass.”

I detect some recognition in Ruin’s blue eyes. His own woman is real delicate. Not like Landry who seems happy, even when she’s hurting inside. Selene wears her crap right out in the open. I bet Ruin worried she couldn’t handle his life, either.

Somehow, they seem to work. Or maybe it’s just they force shit to stick. I doubt Landry dreamed of a giant, long-haired monster showing up to kill her husband and claim her.I’m not her dream guy.No chick is hung up on the beast from the kids’ movie. They want him to turn into a prince at the end. That’ll never be me.

Despite my many flaws, Landry still looks at me like I’m sexy as fuck. When stuff feels good, people will overlook the bad. Maybe that’s what Selene does with Ruin.

“What’s this meeting about?”

“The Edwards family.”

When Ruin doesn’t explain more, I exhale hard. The last thing I need right now is a war.

“I put a call into Kourtney about the custody thing,” I explain, mentioning the club’s lawyer and Hobo’s sister. “She’s working her angles to find a way to make Brooklyn legally Landry’s. I sense the Copper family will start poking at her soon. She’s gotten calls from the asshole’s mom. At first, sweet grandma shit. But the last few were more aggressive. They know he’s missing and assume I did it.”

“If they think you killed him, why the fuck are they getting aggressive?”

“You saw them. These are not bright fucking people. They don’t realize they’re kicking a hornet’s nest with the club.”

Ruin exhales slow and rough like he’s on his last nerve. “Nothing worse than big egos on dumb rednecks. People like the Coppers don’t know when to back down. We saw that with Anita Jordan,” he mutters and notices Hobo arriving from the woods.

Hobo is the oddest member of a club that includes me. I once went three weeks without speaking a word despite living in the same house with these people. I just responded with eye rolls, nodding, and flipping the bird. Don’t know why, either. Once I got started, I didn’t feel like breaking my vow of silence.

Hobo, though, is another kind of weird. He is paranoid about toxins, rarely bathes, and will spend weeks chilling in the woods. I suspect his parents broke his brain when he was too little to notice. Now, he thinks he’s the normal one and everyone else is cracked.

Grinning at Ruin and me from under his wild blond hair, he sighs as he reaches the top of the deck’s steps. “Look at these family men. Being whipped has never looked so golden.”

“Go shower before we get started,” Ruin insists before walking away. “You’ve been in the bush for too long.”

When I remain planted in my spot rather than following my president, Hobo grins at me.

“I spied on your family last night.”

“Don’t do that.”

“She’s real pretty, Nomad. I can see why you were stalking her. Glad that shit worked out.”

“Don’t stalk me.”

Shrugging before walking into the Pigsty, he calls back over his shoulder, “Stop being entertaining.”

I remain outside, admiring a view I saw a thousand times before leaving this home behind. My mind returns to Landry. I can feel her thinking about me. A smile claims my lips, leaving me grinning like a fucking dope.

Forcing myself inside once Hobo’s cleaned up, I take a spot in the corner. Ruin doesn’t waste time making small talk. He’s bound to be bored of that shit from his job as mayor. With us, he’s all asshole.

“Apparently, my love life has given our enemies the impression that I’ve turned into a weak bitch.”

Standing next to our president, Armor nods slightly. I sense when Ruin casually notices his VP’s response. He considers making a stink. The bored part of me wouldn’t mind watching them get in each other’s faces.
