This florkin, with the body of a lion covered with flowers, was much bigger than the one that had attacked the festival. Still, Rumir’s dragon picked up the creature in its claws as if it weighed nothing and rose higher into the air.

“He’ll be fine. Let’s go," Lucian said, and we descended the steps and turned left, jogging through the disarray.

Lucian sent two centaurs flying out of our path with a wave of his hand, causing their swords to skid along the ground.

When his right foot came down mid-stride, ice shot forward across the ground and froze an infected witch in our path, making the electricity that had been dancing across her fingers disappear.

Rumir flew over our heads, his large body casting a shadow, and fire rained down on several infected souls that were making a beeline towards us, running right past Kruards and Dextura as if they weren’t there.

I frowned at that. Wasn’t anything that moved seen as a threat to an infected?

“I can see the facility,” Rumir spoke in my head. “It’s on fire!”

I typed at my bracelet, then grabbed onto Lucian and teleported. At the facility, I stumbled when a hand grabbed mine, and I found a Kruard standing beside me.

He released me and vanished, then reappeared in front of a fae, her white top stained with blood as crimson as her eyes.

Several other Kruards were fighting to defend the facility, so Lucian and I hurried towards the doors. However, all the infected came rushing towards Lucian and me instead of fighting their opponents, as if they didn't want us to enter the building.

But we managed to slip through the doors, and once inside, Lucian quickly reacted, intercepting a transformed white wolf whose claws were seconds away from slicing into me.

They crashed into the wall, and the beast moved to attack me again as if I was his opponent instead of Lucian.

Were they targeting me?

“Go!” Lucian told me as his hand went through the werewolf’s shoulder. “Find Ruby and Axel and teleport them out of here!”

The infected wolf growled, saliva dripping from its mouth as its eyes bored into mine.

Another white wolf appeared, and Lucian shouted, "Natalie, go!”

Just then, fire rolled through the entrance, melting the doors. Rumir walked in and tackled the second wolf, so I ran. I’d been hesitant to leave Lucian, but I knew even with their issues, he and Rumir would look out for each other.

They’d proven that more than once already.

Above all else, they were men of integrity.

Right now, though, I had to focus on the immediate problem at hand. Why was I being targeted by the infected?

It made no sense.

Could the person causing the virus also control the infected? And if that was the case, why target me? Was it because of my growing connection with Tedara? Was I now a threat that needed to be eliminated?

I ran through the halls, a red mist dancing around my hands. The once white walls were stained with blood in various areas.

This place had been so tranquil, a safe haven for new souls to be welcomed to the afterlife. And now, it was being destroyed.

Another transformed wolf ran out of a room and into my path, a severed arm in its mouth. The limb fell to the ground, spilling blood across the white tile, and my anger flared.

I raised my hands, envisioning the wolf’s body crushing beneath my hold. I forced the creature onto its knees until the floor cracked and gave way.

I jumped into the hole in the ground, falling along with the werewolf to the lower level of the facility where Ruby was.

I landed on my feet, stepping over the dead werewolf, only to find myself face-to-face with four infected souls—two werewolves, one witch, and a fae.

Several lights were off while others flickered, and broken chairs and tables littered the ground.

Bolts of electricity danced across the floor from the witch's palms, and without warning, a red shield appeared in front of me. One of the werewolves slammed into the shield. The female fae’s hair billowed around her.
