“Why?” Necos asks.

“Because when she did this to me, her magicae was possessive and she struggled with me out of reach.”

“Oh, shit, I remember,” Ryes says. “We weren’t allowed to touch him or anything.”

“Well then, I think it’s best that we all get on the same page,” Eirik says, pushing to his feet.

“I agree,” Necos adds.

Those two are going to be battling it out to be the one in charge.

And honestly, I have no idea who is going to win.

“So, last time when it was Mael, you were brimming with her magicae,” Zohar says, and Mael nods. “Well, I’m feeling the exact same way now. Based on the fact that all of your eyes are the wrong colour, I’m guessing so are you.”

“I feel invincible,” Eirik says.

“That’s how you always feel,” Etrix says, rolling his eyes.

“Well, obviously, this time I actually have the power to back it up.”

“I feel a lot stronger,” Necos adds. “After the battle at the castle, I was a little drained, and now it’s like I’ve recharged.”

“I feel like that too,” Ciar says. “It’s like I’ve sat under the moon.”

“We need to expend some of this energy,” Zohar says. “It’s dangerous for us otherwise.”

“Can’t we just give it back to her?” Mael asks, tilting his head. “Like the other day?”

“No,” Zohar says.

“What happened the other day?” I interject.

But, of course, they all ignore me. I slam my hand down on the floor, surprised when vines shoot out of the walls.

“What the fuck, Jasper?” Eirik snarls.

“Seriously, Jazz?” Necos asks.

“It wasn’t on purpose,” I say, snapping my fingers, and they disappear. “What happened the other day?”

“Zoe blew up at Professor Byzatic,” Mael says. “And when she lost control, I absorbed her magicae.”

“No, it wasn’t you,” Zohar says. “This rune”—he points to one on his calf, and we all rush to find the same one on ourselves—“is designed to store magicae. Her magicae. She can then take it back when she needs it.”

“Fucking hell,” I whisper.

“It’s pretty smart,” Necos says. “What do all the others do?”

Mael recounts a few, ones he’s figured out with Zoe’s help.

“But she knows exactly what they do,” Ciar says. “We just haven’t made it a massive priority. Mael’s got his hidden away most of the time anyway.”

That causes my magicae to revolt within me, but I understand the reasoning for it. We need to protect ouranima nexumeven if that means hiding the marks that she gifted us.

Our pride is not more important than her life.

Even I can admit that.
