Sean shakes his head. “Something’s bothering her but she didn’t want to tell him. I’m going to speak to her later.”

Hence the drive.

“The car’s been ready for weeks, hasn’t it?”

He nods. “Months, really.”

I get why he saved it.

Our mate’s used to ignoring her own needs to suit the needs of everyone else.

He knew she’d say yes because she knows the car’s been a labor of love for him.

It’s not how it should be, but she’s slowly been getting better at asking for what she wants.

Eventually, she won’t have to think twice about it.

Eventually, she’ll tell us when something’s bothering her.

Until then, we’ll do whatever it takes to remind her we’re not going anywhere.

Chapter Six

Ourafternoonclassesaren’thalf as bad as the morning ones were, and it helps ease my worries. Having one class where I’m starting off behind everyone else isn’t so bad. I’m a little lost in Math for Magic, too, I guess, but the professor isn’t half as imposing, and I’m not put on the spot five minutes after I walk in the door. When she hands out our books, we all get the same one.

Rachel seems kind of distracted since she came back from lunch, but her lightly dishevelled hair and clothes give away what she rushed off with her Omega to do. The heat she’s going through is identical to mine, and I find myself feeling a little jealous and relieved in equal measure. I know I wouldn’t have been able to resist if any or all of my mates started something, and it would have felt so damn good I wouldn’t care if I walked into class looking like I just rolled out of bed. At the same time, it would be pretty embarrassing if anyone noticed. And people have definitely noticed.

Rachel rolls her eyes when class ends and the girls behind us start laughing.

Oh, Goddess. Those are the same three awful witch-hybrids from our last class.

They’re the ones who whispered about me after my pathetic attempt at summoning flames.

Now, they’re giving Rachel derisive looks and muttering about the repulsive primal urges of shifters.

I hear them utter Carter’s name, and I know instantly that they’ve gone too far.

Rachel turns to them as she picks up her bag. She looks one of them right in the eyes.

“What’s your problem, exactly?”

My stomach lurches at the ice in her voice. She’s calmly pissed, but this is exactly how fights start and enemies are made. I pick up my books and stand there beside her, trying not to wince at the way these girls are looking at us now. Their amusement is gone. It’s been replaced by anger.

“Who do you think you’re talking to, bitch?” the tall brunette bites back, her stare narrowing.

Her two friends are quiet, their expressions mirroring their chosen leader’s.

Rachel’s lips pull back into a grin that’s nothing short of vicious. “I’m talking to the bitch who’s been whispering about me and my friend all damn day, bitch.”

The brunette’s nostrils flare.

Oh Goddess, no.

I look around and see the professor’s gone, and the other students are filing out of the room. A few of them look back in mild interest, but most of them don’t seem to care.

“Did you just call me a bitch?” the leader asks.
