“Okay then.”

The magic that shoots from her hands as she gives a flick of her wrists in their direction moves at lightning fast speed, and the three witches are thrown backwards and upwards, over the tops of the trees, toward the lake. The sounds of them hitting the water are remarkably loud.

“Wow,” Jillian says. “Maybe we should go for a swim.”

“I could eat,” her Beta jokes.

At least, I hope it’s a joke. It’s kind of hard to tell with Mason.

“Nah,” Nix says. “Witches give me heartburn.”

Jillian laughs and I catch Parker smiling when I look back at him.

“Your gator friends are nuts,” he leans in, stage-whispering.

I smile seeing the feigned hurt on Nix’s face.

Then Rachel’s friend steps forward. Cheryl is a female Alpha, what some packs would call a Luna, and she makes me a little nervous on sight. I’ve heard about her, but this would be the first time I’ve met her. Her corset top and skirt are quite gothic and pretty, but the dark colors make her pale skin look paler and give her a more imposing look than softer shades would offer. She does seem to like dark colors. Her lips are painted a deep, dark shade of purple that I’d never have the guts to wear.

She gives a wry smile as Rachel drops back to the ground.

“Well, I’d call that a success,” Rachel says.

“It’s not over. Ithinkyou just made them angry,” Cheryl tells her. “Three witches can form a coven when there’s a distinct leader. And covens can draw magic from Freya.”

Cheryl nods at her men, and they take their wolf forms swiftly, shredding some of their clothes in the process.

Taking charms out of her pocket, she ties one around the neck of each of her mates.

“What are those?” I ask.

“Defensive charms. They’ll stop the witches from being able to use magic on them.”

I exchange a look with Parker. He looks as shocked as I feel.

“That’s a thing?” he asks.

She raises an eyebrow at him. “Isn’t your mate part witch?”

Oh. Ouch. That felt like a burn.

“I was raised in a pack,” I tell her. “I don’t know much about magic.”

She nods slowly. “I’m a quarter witch. I have limited ability, but I spent my whole life perfecting every spell I could do. I didn’t know about my wolf side until I was designated to Lunar Academy and she started to wake up.”

“I had no idea.”

She shrugs. “I thought fate was screwing me over. Turned out I shouldn’t have doubted Freya.”

Her Alpha mate’s wolf rubs against her legs, and she strokes his head before she sighs.

“They’re coming back,” she says, before the splashing sounds make it more obvious.

Rachel’s mates shift into wolves, and she looks at Cheryl. “Got any more of those charms?”

Cheryl nods and passes them out. I help with the one for Rachel’s Omega while Adrian’s wolf growls at Cheryl, forcing her to pass Rachel the charm to put on him.

“I’ll never understand why Alpha males have real trouble being close to other Alphas,” Cheryl mutters, before holding out charms to Jillian and her mates.
