She smiles. “You don’t know much about witch magic, do you?”

“I guess not,” I admit, feeling a little silly.

My mate is a witch so I should at least try to learn the basics. Everett asks a lot of questions when Cheryl casts spells, and I never thought much about why. Now, I get it. He’s looking to understand her limitations because our mate is stubborn. He’s quick to say no to using magic when it’s not necessary.

“Let me worry about the magical part,” Rachel says. “I can get us in, and we won’t be seen. The problem’s going to be getting the waitress alone to ask what she needs help with.”

Right. It wasn’t exactly empty when we left. I check the time. It’s close to 1 p.m. now. I check the distance using my phone. It’s about a twenty-minute walk back to the diner.

“Maybe we should wait a little bit.”

“If you’re thinking we should go after the diners are gone, we’ll miss out on listening in to their conversations if we do that,” she says, reminding me there are two parts to this new plan.

“Right, right,” I agree.

I don’t like it, but I quit trying to tear it apart.

What we’re about to do is relatively risk-free.

“You seem nervous,” Rachel says, before she steps back from Everett’s car.

“I’m used to a more direct approach,” I admit. “This feels weird.”

She waves at Everett’s car, and it vanishes from sight.

My jaw slackens as I stare at the spot it just occupied.

“Holy shit,” I whisper.

“I’ve used a simple charm to hide the car,” she says. “That way I’m not draining resources we might need when we get to the diner.”

“That’s pretty fucking cool,” I tell her, moving forward and putting my hand out.

It bumps into the trunk, but the car stays completely hidden.

“Cheryl knows a lot of charm-based spells, and some of them are really detailed.”

“I know,” I tell her, smiling in memory of Bianca Springer’s freak out over a couple of those highly detailed spells at the academy a few months ago.

“Are you ready to move?” she asks.

I nod, though I don’t really feel ready.

“I’m going to use charms for us too,” she tells me. “They won’t see us, or hear us, but we’ll have to be careful to move around without bumping into anyone or anything. They’ll know something’s up if that happens. I have a few defensive charms ready if we need them, but hopefully we won’t.”

She passes me a charm. I take the little silver locket.

“Cheryl has dozens of these at home.”

“Most witches do. Charms and potions are basics,” she says. “But most of us use them a lot more than the more complex spells. They can be time-consuming to make but they’re worth it.”

“What do I do with this?” I ask.

“Hold on to it. I’ll invoke it in a second, and you can put it in a pocket then. We could wait until we get closer, but it’s probably safer to walk the whole way back without risking being seen.”

She looks around, and it makes me paranoid enough to do the same. The road is clear. The trail is completely silent, and full of overgrown plants and weeds. We’re alone. No one’s around.

“We have a couple of options before I invoke the charms,” she tells me. “The way these work is we’ll be invisible to everyone, including yourself. It’ll feel weird, so take a second to get used to that. I’ll be able to see you because the magic is mine. You won’t be able to see me.”
