Silas walks off, calling on his sister.

A louder rumble of thunder sounds above our heads, and a drizzle of rain dampens my skin.

I move my purse out from under Silas’ hoody and I zip up the jacket before I put the strap back over my head. I look through my charm supplies while I wait for Cheryl to see my message. Knock out spells, and fireballs, check. I really should get a bit more creative with my charms. The basics are effective, but they’re also pretty boring. It’s a good thing I’m juiced up and ready to use my magic for whatever I need to do tonight.

Truth is, I might not even get the chance to use it. The necromancer inside could be working with Silas and Sara’s dad. If she’s here for other reasons and we need to put up a fight, chances are Kelly will be the best equipped for whatever she throws at us.

Dragging Amanda and Cheryl out here feels like overkill, but Adrian’s my Alpha and when he decided it was necessary, I shouldn’t have questioned it. I need to trust his instincts more and let him lead us.

Silas walks back, shaking his head. “Sara still isn’t answering me.”

“What about Cheryl?” Adrian asks me.

I check my phone. “Nothing yet.”

The drizzle becomes a downpour.

I pull up the hood of Silas’ hoody.

All of us look to Adrian, waiting to be given instruction.

Our Alpha lets out a sigh. “Let’s wait on the front porch.”

There’s some cover over there, I guess.

We move quickly over grass that’s quickly turning into swampy mud.

Adrian sighs as his white sneakers get filthy. I can feel little splashes of mud on my ankles, and it really makes me wish I’d put on jeans this morning.

We make it to the porch, my mates soaked from the hair down.

Silas’ hoody saved me. I take the hood down. My bare legs are a bit wet and muddy, but I’m otherwise pretty much warm and dry. I guess I could be drier, and so could they. I’m used to using the simple spell for my hair, but it’s easy to use it on clothes and skin as well.

“What the …” Carter says, touching his hair.

“Oh, wow,” Silas murmurs, looking down at the shirt that was stuck to his skin a second ago.

Adrian smiles at me. “Thanks.”

“No biggie,” I tell him.

It’s probably the only chance I’ll get to use my magic tonight, anyway.

I send Cheryl a second message, giving her the full details of where we are, and then I slip the phone into my purse. All we can do now is wait.

The clouds give another rumble above, and the heavens open-up. The rain pelts down harder, the bottom of the balcony above us starting to creak.

“Holy shit,” Carter says, looking up with wide eyes. There’s a dark patch in the corner that looks like it might cave. He’s standing right under it.

I haul him away from that spot and the corner caves, debris falling and water streaming down from the hole quickly.

“This place isn’t safe,” Adrian says, clearly about to give an order.

Unfortunately, in that same instant, there’s an incredibly loud bang as the door blows inward and shatters into smithereens across the dusty, bare floorboards in the hallway.

I catch the familiar scent of dark magic a second too late. An invisible force pulls at us, dragging us backwards toward the open door and the darkness beyond.

My eyes fix on Carter in front of me. His terrified stare awakens my magical reflexes, and I use a quick, simple knock-back spell to throw my Omega off the porch, into the rain. He gets up slowly, starting to move back toward us.
