“Yet, here she is. I assume she’s one of the spirits Dorothea gathered or else she wouldn’t be in this room with the others. I’m entitled to my offerings.”

Shit.I press my lips together.Am I really arguing with the ruler of hell over my mate’s sister’s spirit?

This is insane. I’m writing my own ticket to hell right now. I can feel it.

Yet, I can’t make myself stop.

“Please. Dorothea didn’t kill her. She wasn’t supposed to be here at all. She was never sacrificed for you. Even when she was killed by witches who worship you. They didn’t sacrifice her soul.”

I can feel everyone’s eyes on me as I talk, but no one seems to know what to say.

Adrian’s angry, and afraid, and ready to fight for me if the Dark Lord tries anything, I think everyone’s ready to fight, but I don’t think they’ll need to and I’m not going to back down and start apologizing now. I’m trying to do what’s right.

They all think I’m insane. Every one of them. Including Silas, and his father.

The Dark Lord taps a finger against his mouth. “Okay. Sara Madden is released.”

Oh my Goddess! Is he serious? Could it really be that easy?

He clicks his fingers, and his spirits start filing into hell.

Sara stays where she is, shock in her eyes.

Silas hugs me and I hug him back.

“One last thing,” the Dark Lord says. “It feels strange to have to warn someone, but I never usually walk away without taking every soul in the room. I suppose there’s a first time for everything.” He clears his throat and takes a bow. “You have five minutes before this building collapses, and you’re buried alive.”

He steps through the hell door, and it closes.

The floor shakes under us and a swell of panic flows over me.

Adrian claps his hands, getting everyone’s attention.

“Five minutes, people. We need to find an exit in this roof. Get looking.”

Chapter Seventy-Four

Rachel

We’vewastedacoupleof minutes by the time I realize what could save us. I blame the shock of being told we have five minutes to find the exit before we’re all buried alive.

The necromancer’s magic is gone. Her spells deactivated when she died.

“We can use magic again! We can teleport out of here,” I call out. “Amanda, take Carter. Cheryl, take Noah and Samuel. Silas and Adrian, you’re with me. Sara, you should be able to leave the building.”

The ghost girl nods and disappears. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one in shock.

My mates wrap their arms around me, and I teleport us to the street above. We get there in seconds. It’s cold, but the storm that was raging above the mansion has stopped.

“I can’t believe we just survived an encounter with the Dark Lord,” Cheryl says.

“Especially after Rachel challenged him,” Noah adds.

Silas smiles at me. “Thank you for that.”

“I couldn’t let him just take her.”

“I would order you not to do it next time,” Adrian starts. “But I know you wouldn’t be able to help yourself.”
