I smile at his compliment even as I feel my cheeks flushing slightly. I tell myself to stop it. It was just a line and a cheesy as hell one at that. This thought does nothing to stop me from feeling warm inside though.

“That’s because I was in Sound Bound,” I say, nodding my head in the direction of the club I have just left.

“I sure picked the wrong club tonight,” he says.

“You did,” I agree. “It was bouncing in there.

“That’s not what I…” he starts, then shakes his head slightly and smiles. “You knew exactly what I meant.”

I can’t help but laugh and he laughs with me.

“So, you had a good night then?” he asks after a moment.

“Yeah,” I say. “I really did. What about you?”

“Nothing special, but it wasn’t awful or anything.” He pauses. “But it’s certainly looking up now.”

“Is that so?” I murmur with a raised eyebrow.

I’m almost at the front of the cab line and I don’t want the time with this man to end. “Shall we share a cab?” I hear myself asking.

“Come home with me,” he says, his eyes darkening and his voice intense.

I blink at how confident and forward he is. That wasn’t a question or a suggestion. It was a command. He didn’t ask if I wanted to go home with him, he just told me that I should. I like that. I like a man who knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to say so.

For a few seconds I silently debate playing hard to get, make him work for the yes, but what’s the point? He’s old enough to have had his share of women and he must know when someone is into him. And I’m definitely into him. He would make the perfect one night stand. Playing hard to get at this point will just make me look like I’m craving attention.

“Ok,” I say.

I feel that heat swirl around my body as I agree to his command.

If he is taken aback by my willingness to oblige him, he doesn’t show it. He just smiles slowly at me. Fucking hell, look at him I can’t imagine he gets many ‘no thank yous’.

The couple in front of us get into the cab that pulls up and we’re next. We shuffle forward as a large group of men join the back of the line. They are a fair distance away from us, but they’re shouting and laughing, and they are so loud it still almost drowns out what he says next, although I do manage to catch it.

“I’m Len by the way,” he says.

“Pleasure to meet you Len,” I smile.

Then another cab pulls up and he opens the door and gestures for me to get in. I clamber in and shuffle across the seat. Len follows me in and pulls the door closed behind him.

“Ten ninety-three Miller Square please,” he says to the driver and the cab pulls away.

I stay quiet, trying to hide my surprise. Miller Square is in one of the most desirable zip codes in the city. It’s the home of investment bankers and traders and several B list celebrities. I peer at Len out of the corner of my eye. Is he a model or something that I haven’t recognized yet? I’m sure he isn’t although he is most definitely hot enough to be.

“What do you do for a living?” I ask after a moment.

“You really want to talk about work right now?”

I shake my head. Truth is I don’t. I don’t care if Len is some sort of celebrity or if he is a trust fund kid. Tonight is all about finding a hen’s tooth. I don’t need to spoil it with mundane reality.

“I know what you’re doing now,” he murmurs softly. “You heard my address and now you’re trying to work out if I’m the face of some fancy cologne or something aren’t you?”

I debate saying no but he must be able to read the truth on my face and instead I shrug.

“Just wondering if you’re not going to be on Oprah or something and tell her about the time you took a girl home that was so clueless she didn’t even know who you were?”

Len laughs. “Nope you’re definitely safe from that. I have a normal job that pays well.”
