“I’d love to see it!” Mulberry clapped her hands together. “Are all those puppies adopted?”

“Yes, puppies are easy. Our older ones need some love. Let me show you.”

Nick smiled as Meera went into her speech about the staff and money required to keep their doors open.

At the door to the large kennels, she paused. Now, these guys don’t like to get too close. We’re working on rehabilitating them.”

She opened the door, and inside, the lights were dimmed. A few dogs were in the kernels, and others were in the large dog run that led outside at the back of the structure.

“Hey Noodle,” Nick stopped by where the black French bulldog he was particularly fond of was hanging out in the dog run, chewing a toy. When he first met Noodle, the dog cowered in the corner, not letting anyone get close to him, and now he ran over, excited to see Nick.

“He’s ready to be moved soon and needs a home,” Meera smiled.

Nick knew his canine friend needed a home, but with his work for Axis Management, he definitely wasn’t the right owner. But now that he was working at Laurent Industries, Nick laughed, thinking of bringing the bulldog into the office.

“he’s gorgeous! Is he okay to pet?”

“Yes,” Merra said.

“Hello, Noodle! Oh, what a good boy you are.” She picked up the chew toy covered in slobber and threw it.

Nick opened the dog run, bringing her inside.

He petted Biscuit, a three-legged terrier, grabbed a tennis ball from the basket, and threw it, watching the terrier chase after it, his missing leg not bothering him.

He loved dogs, and every time he visited, he told himself Noodle, the velcro dog, and he wasn’t a match; it somehow became harder.

He grinned. “What is it?” Mulberry asked.

“I was thinking of Livia’s face if I brought Noodle to the office.”

Mulberry put a hand over her mouth, laughing. “He is gorgeous.”

“He is very popular with visitors,” Merra said.

“Wherever he goes, I’d like to keep in touch if possible.”

“I know. It’s already in his file. Let me show Mulberry the therapy pools.”

Nick hung back as Meera and Mulberry excitedly talked about the facility.

From a dedicated team of vets that included animal behaviourists, Meera had made Misfit Paws Rescue a special place.

After one last pet to Noodle and Biscuit, they followed Meera outside and headed to the next building.

A large German Shephard circled them happily.

“You can say hi. This one is mine and loves pets. Meet Albert.”

Mulberry crouched down, petting Albert behind the ears.

She didn’t care that her designer jeans were smudged with grass stains and had no fear that the dog was filled with germs. Albert licked her cheek.

Mulberry laughed. “Nice to meet you, Albert.”

Nick’s heart twisted, and discomfort settled around him as he watched her, the sunlight highlighting the red tone in her hair, her face happy and free of worry and stress.

“And here is our indoor therapy room.” Meera walked them into a vast square building. A few volunteers looked over as they entered, and Meera stopped to talk to a vet.
