Everyone looked at Alex and he sighed. “Well, we have a couple of options. In both scenarios though, I would like to be taking a step back.”

Everyone frowned, and I was surprised that Inferna was the one to say something. Lea and Minni both cocked their heads, Ember happily in Lea’s lap. Mich, Cinder, and Lora were silent, watching him intently. Jaehan, Charlie, and Billy also had their full attention on him, curious.

“Alex, we do like having you as our boss,” Inferna said.

Alex raised a brow. “I think you are the better leader. And I’m not saying that all of you have todislikeme if I’m not the boss anymore, but personally I am done with being in control. I want to take a step back, and if anything, you can be my boss. I’d rather focus on the financial part of the company instead of being the leader of everything else. I have been doing this for a long time and…I want to focus on other things. Today was a hard day for all of us, and none of you had to help. I didn’t know that I would lose most of my magic today either. Still, I am thankful for the way everything has turned out. Alfred is gone. We are all safe. And I can look you in the eye and tell you I would rather not be the boss anymore, Inferna.”

Inferna took a deep breath, crossing her arms. Somehow, even covered in grime, soot, and blood— she was still a badass. Art and Calen both watched her with reverence as she let his words fall over all of us.

“I have made a lot of mistakes on my path to power,” Alex said. “I’ve been around for a few hundred years chasing a dream that led me to nothing but destruction. If some goodness can come out of it, then I will be happy.”

“There has been a lot of goodness that has come from it,” Ember said. “Look around you, Alex. All of us have found our mates because we ended up working at the office. All of us were brought together because of the mistakes that were made. And Alfred was the one who went crazy, not you.”

“It’s true,” Jaehan said. “I mean… all of us here have been hurt by him, and you’ve tried to help. I don’t think we can really blame you. And if you want to blame yourself, well… then, I forgive you.”

That brought a resounding agreement from everyone.

Alex swallowed hard, letting out a breath as he leaned forward. I could almost see a weight lift from his shoulders, his body relaxing. “Thank you,” he said.

I rubbed his back, giving him a soft smile.

“So…” Inferna trailed off. “What are the options then?”

Alex cleared his throat, leaning back against the couch again. “Restart the company completely from the ground up, continue to create an app that helps monsters and witches, and leave behind the hell that has been Warts & Claws Inc. I would help fund everything, you would be the main boss. And that’s assuming everyone still wants to work. The other option is after today, we all walk away and go elsewhere.”

“I said that I quit, but I didn’t mean likethat,” Billy said.

I laid my head on Alex’s shoulder, knowing that this was harder on him than he was letting on.

“If we restarted, I would want to change a lot,” Inferna said.

“I’d imagine so,” Alex chuckled.

“I’d changea lot, actually.”

“Good,” Alex said.

Inferna smirked, relaxing. “Hmm. Well. What does everyone think?”

She looked around the room.

Anne surprised me by raising her hand first. “I will stay if it’s a new place completely and is restructured. But otherwise, I am done. And I want a vacation with my two mates where I can forget about working in general for a couple weeks.”

“I second that,” Ember said.

“I third that,” Jaehan chuckled.

“Does everyone agree to that?” Inferna asked.

I looked around the room.

Everyone did agree.

Inferna’s eyes landed on me. “And what about you, Sylvia?”

“I’d like to start working somewhere,” I said, earning a few chuckles. “But I’d like some time with my mates too.”

Anne leaned over and kissed my cheek.
