What the hell was I doing here anyway?

I was her boss, not her boyfriend, and I was sure that hiring an additional security team was the best thing Meghan could’ve done under the circumstances. Hell, it was exactly what I would’ve done if I had been in her shoes. With a frown, I added a generous amount of coffee into both mugs and pushed away all thoughts of the danger lurking here.

Or tried to.

“Where is your little hairball?”

On cue, Skittles meowed and jumped onto the counter in front of her. He stared at me with his big yellow eyes and blinked. “Clever little thing, aren’t you?”

Skittles continued to stare at me.

“I see you’re making yourself at home,” Meghan commented. “Did you do the same with all of the other employees, or am I the only one getting a wake-up call?”

I flashed her a grin. “Only you, Meg.”

Meghan pushed herself off the counter. “Okay, I don’t know why you’re actually here, but I need to shower and get ready for the day.”

“I could join you, and I’m great with my hands, as you know”

Meghan sighed and gave me a withering look. “I have a better idea. You and Skittles can get to know each other since you like cats so much.”

“I’ll win him over.”

Meghan rolled her eyes and walked away. “Yeah, I don’t think so.”

Once the door clicked shut, Skittles’ tail stopped swishing, and he looked directly at me. His gaze stayed on me as I rifled through the fridge. I poured a generous amount of cream into her mug, just how she liked it, leaving mine black, just how I liked it. Through the thin wall, I heard the water running and paused.

A part of me wanted to join her in the bathroom and wrap my arms around her, just to make sure she was really okay and shield her from the world. The other part of me knew it was a bad idea, regardless of how much I cared about her. With a slight shake of my head, I went through the containers in the fridge and pulled out a few ingredients. While I prepared her an omelette, I kept glancing over at Skittles, who inched closer and closer until he stood directly in front of me. When I held my hand out to him, he sniffed it and blinked.

Moments later, he made a soft purring sound in the back of his throat and rubbed his head against my hand. I smiled and scratched behind his ear. “I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist.”

When Meghan came back out, her hair wet, and in a knee length floral dress, I did a double take. She glanced between Skittles and I before she fixed her attention on the cheese and mushroom omelet laid out on the counter.

“I didn’t know you knew how to cook.”

“It’s a well-kept secret.” I carried the plates out to the living room and set them down on the coffee table. “Omelettes are my specialty, but if you tell anyone, I’ll have to kill you.”

“I’ve always wondered what it would feel like to have your hands around my throat, deciding when I breathe, and when I don’t.” Meghan said casually as she picked up the coffee mugs and carried them over to the living room.

FUCK.

This tiny little thing who had rough and tumbled one time in her life, is casually talking about breathe play. What the fuck is happening here.

Fuck, she’d better watch her mouth, or else she might get what she asks for.

“You look surprised.” She smiled deviously at me. “So, whatareyou doing here?”

I sat down on the couch and patted the spot next to me. “Come and sit.”

Meghan scrunched up her face, giving me an annoyed look before she lowered herself onto the couch next to me. “Serena told you what happened the other day with that guy in my office, didn’t she?”

I lifted my mug and eyed her over the rim. “Yes, she was concerned. I was coming out here anyway, so I told her I’d check in.”

Meghan lifted up her chin. “I can handle it, you know.”

I took a sip of my coffee and winced. “I know you can. It’s not why I’m here.”

Which was a complete lie. McItnyre’s guy had waltzed right into her office and threatened her. And she thought she could handle it. It made me chuckle to see her think she could take on a threat like that. And then my stomach turned thinking of the reality of it. I would never let something happen to her. I could never forgive myself.
