“I’m good,” I said. “Just talk through the doorway here.”

“Okay,” she said, and she looked down at her bare legs and her utter lack of clothing and grimaced.

What was I even doing here? I folded my arms over my chest. My voice came out gruff. “You got any other interest in this? Someone else who’s offering to go up there with you?”

“Itoldyou,” she said. “Everyone said that the only person stupid enough to do it would beyou.” Then she winced. “I mean, I’m not saying you’re stupid—”

“What are the coordinates?” I said, lifting one hand, the one with my bracelet.

“Oh, um…” She pulled up her own bracelet and pulled up a holoprojection which beamed up out of the top of it. She read the coordinates to me.

I dutifully inputted them and then sighed. “We could get maybe halfway by speeder, but there’s only an ancient, falling-down footbridge over this river here.” I turned my bracelet so that she could see the holoproj of the map that I was looking at. I jabbed a finger into the river in question.

“A hover speeder?” she said. They could go over water.

“Nah, never make it,” I said. “They’re all solar powered and there’s no light up there.”

“Right,” she said with a sigh. “So, it’s hopeless?”

“Well, look, if we go this way…” I traced a route with my finger, “we can go around the river and we can get the speeder up there but it’ll take days. We’ll have to camp out there. If we have a speeder, it should be safe enough. The vvoln won’t be able to get inside, and we can sleep inside it.”

“Are you going to do it? Are you going to take me?” She gave me a big smile.

“I shouldn’t,” I said.

“Look, I really can’t get you that money,” she said. “I would if I had any access to funds, but I actually—”

“Itisstupid,” I said, looking her over. My gaze settled on the place where her shirt hit her bare thighs. Our women didn’t have legs like humans did, and I would have sworn to you that I didn’t even like their smooth, bare skin there, that I preferred a woman with solid, furred legs and hooves. I would have said that humans’ legs looked breakable and weak and exposed, like larvae, like hairless spawns of rodents, like…

I was a liar, though, because they were mesmerizing, her thighs, the way they were shaped, the curves of them, the way they met her knees, every aspect of them completely on display. I… there was maybe nothing more erotic in thegalaxythan the look of the swell of her calves.

She noticed me noticing and she pressed her thighs together.

My pleasure cock tried to push its way out behind the fur on my crotch again and I shifted position, lowered my arms, covering myself by putting clasped hands in front of myself and forcing my gaze upward to meet hers.

Her lips were parted, and the tighter she squeezed her thighs together the headier her scent was, a musk of undeniable arousal.

My jaw tightened. “This isn’t like me,” I said, echoing what I’d said to her earlier.

“Me either,” she whispered.

“I shouldn’t take you up there,” I said. The bottom had gone out of my voice. “I should probably stay away from you. This is… this is…”

“But you’re going to, anyway?” She bit down on her bottom lip.

I swallowed. “Has anyone else… any of the other donen men you’ve interacted with, have they… reacted to you—”

“No, just you,” she said. She sounded out of breath at that. “And this reaction, my reaction, it’s only for you, too. I don’t…”

I furrowed my brow. Well, that blew my little theory of human girls breaking through my suppressants, didn’t it? I reached up to run a finger over the tip of one of my antlers. “Huh.”

“Are you going to help me get to the ship?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I am.”And, uh, I don’t want you too far away from me either due to this weird, inexplicable possessive thing I have developed. “You on Geheri time?” Geheri was the Toth home planet, and all units of measurement, including time, tended to be predicated on it.

“No?” She was confused.

“I just mean that this planet is much smaller than Geheri, so the day and night cycle is really short, and usually we sleep either every second or third night, depending, and the frequent short sleep cycles aren’t always easy for offworlders who are used to sleeping for long periods of time, like a whole Geheri night.”
